Photos app freezes upon import / photo importing problems

Hello, I was trying to import photos from my iPhone via charging cable and upon import the photo app freezes. I reset my phone and tried again and it worked for the first import but another problem is that I can only upload 3-4 videos at a time before the photos app says something went wrong and I have to start the whole process all over again. Because of this, when I go to import again it just freezes once it hits my total photo and video count. This problem has been persistent ever since I started uploading photos and videos this past year or two and it really hinders my progress. Thanks for any help.

2019-11-25T04:04:58+00:00 The only solution I've been able to use is removing the SD card we use in our Moto G6 phones for extra storage of photos. The Photos app seemed to freeze once it tried to read past around 2000 photos, and we had at least 10 GB worth on the SD card. Removing it made the app just search for photos in internal storage, and it worked fine.
I will note that it had previously been able to scan the sd card just fine, but now won't. I suspect it's because the volume is too late.
Anyway, maybe this can help others.

2019-11-25T05:11:31+00:00 Under "this PC or my computer", right click on "Apple iPhone" and click on "Import Pictures and Videos", this will bypass the "windows photos" app problem and will import your photos from the iphone.

Does not work - gets a little way though then gets an error with a file. Skip the file and I get an error with the next file. It does not recover.

Please can you tell me how that works - a card reader. I am having the same problem as everyone else but nothing else has helped. I don't understand what a card reader is. Duh, I know. Sorry.
