Photos app freezes upon import / photo importing problems

Hello, I was trying to import photos from my iPhone via charging cable and upon import the photo app freezes. I reset my phone and tried again and it worked for the first import but another problem is that I can only upload 3-4 videos at a time before the photos app says something went wrong and I have to start the whole process all over again. Because of this, when I go to import again it just freezes once it hits my total photo and video count. This problem has been persistent ever since I started uploading photos and videos this past year or two and it really hinders my progress. Thanks for any help.

    hello everybody,

I do not understand why you are continuing to discuss about this subject:

    • it is clear that there is a bug in the import function of Microsoft Photos,
    • this "freeze" problem, again, is not specific to iPhones or iPads: there are some additional difficulties

due to HEIC and HEVC formats introduced by Apple, but solutions are known. Again, you may get the

freeze with a Corean or Chinese Android smartphone, or with a Japanese camera...

    • it is clear that Microsoft should solve this problem as soon as possible, and it is difficult to understand

why this problem has not yet been solved…

But, you can live with that… There is a problem in Photos, but there are 2 other ways to import your photos and, on may 24 (page 37), "Gelatinous_Blob" gave you the URL of a "Complete Guide to Importing Your Photos in Windows 10"

Personally, I have always used "Import Photos and Videos manually using File Explorer", but I have discovered in this post **"**Importing Pictures and Videos wizard". I tested it, and it works...

We know that third method, "Importing using the Photos App", currently, does not work.

For your info: I have found in french Feedback Hub a subject, "Photos App is having issues importing photos from USB devices", where Simon W, Microsoft engineer, wrote "We are investigating this issue and will post an update soon". He wrote that one month ago…

    Nobody knows what "soon" means.

Yeah.  MS Photos does not seem to work.  Maybe I can get one movie to trasnfer, then it wil not work at all, cant stay connecte ot iPad.

SOLUTION (a bit of a hack, but no coding involved):  Move the movies on your ipad to a new folder you create in the process, and save under the "Numbers" or "Pages" folders.  You can do this by hitting "select" near the upper right hand corner when you ar browsing photos.  Then after you select the ones you want, then hit the share button in the lower left hand corner.  then scorrl down to th ebottom and select "save to files"  Then make a new folder under "Numbers".

Then use the itunes file sharing feature to browse to your folder and save the whole folder to your computer.  This is also not totally easy to use and the published Apple instructions are kinda vague, but it does work.

Why doesnt Itune just let you xfer movies and photos easily?  I dont know.  Seems like MS and Apple just dont want to make things easy.

    Hi Jeanette,

    That is the problem!

This is a bug. You would have the same bug with an Android smartphone or a camera...

    Update:

Using File Explorer to manually copy the files from phone/usb to Photos, it appears it does not list all the files in the source! On one occasion when I errored out, I compared what the phone actually had around the error by date, and found FIVE missing from Explorer's view.

This has to be a bug in the file handler for that device being unable to list every file. So while I have more photos than I had before, I still don't have them all!

    I give up
