Your Phone app shows duplicate sent messages

My Your Phone app is duplicating messages sent, sporadically. This has been happening the past few days. Windows and Your Phone apps have been updated. The duplicates are appearing in my Android texting app (Textra) as well. I have used Pulse, Google Messages, and Samsung Flow previously w/o this occurring.

Windows 10 Pro 1903

Android Pie, standard, non-rooted ROM

'Advisors', please don't ask me to run scannow or complete a repair install...thanks.

Another interesting side effect, though.  If I send a text from my phone, it doesn't show up in the Your Phone interface.  I think it was showing up there before I killed off the Backup & Sync service.

Am I right in thinking that they should be showing up?  I'll have to turn it back on to see I suppose.

I have too many Windows apps not to make that my primary OS, so this Android/Windows 10/Your Phone combination is definitely the right answer for me.  Now that I have a way to manage the dupe issue, It works generally very well.

The thing I need now is RCS support, which supposedly is available now on the S20.  I'm assuming it'll migrate down to my Note 10 soon enough.  I do have an increasing number of contacts that are capable of RCS messaging, and those don't even show up in Your Phone at this point.  I've actually missed a few messages because of that hole.

All moving in the right direction, though.

    Hey @JefferyAndre,

I think you're right about everything, and hope that the level of detail we've been gathering will be helpful to Microsoft.  I'm also prepared to accept that (maybe) there's nothing they can do to fix it, and that they'll simply list known issues with the "system" along with suggestions for people to try.

Regardless of the minor annoyance this provides, we're still much better off than iPhone users, who can't do any of this (due to the lockdown-nature of iOS).

As a follow up.  I too thought it had something to do with wi-fi vs not, Bluetooth, etc.  I thought it was a connection combination issue.  The problem is in trying to test all those scenarios over many months, I ALWAYS ended up with the problem resurfacing no matter which configuration I chose.  And I never found any of those that I could turn on/off and instantly have the problem resolve.

Once I discovered the AT&T Backup & Sync effect on the dupe problem, and I turned it off, I've moved in and out of combinations of connections, including wired, wi-fi, etc.  I have not had a single dupe in any configuration since I turned off the Backup & Sync function.

If I turn that service back on, they start up again immediately.

Back in my software development days, that is exactly the kind of "switch" we looked/hoped for tracking down bugs.  I'm hoping Microsoft can use that info to replicate it reliably and trace their way into the thing.  My concern is it's a fundamental problem with the message database on the phone and not a Your Phone app problem.  I'm guessing there's an API that Microsoft is using to access the message data, and they may be using it entirely correctly.  If more than one service is using it, maybe it's the code behind the API that's failing, and not Microsoft's code.

    Hi @Wayne (live.com#ankonaskiff17)"),

No doubt about it, this is quite a puzzle!  As to why it's happening, there's not a lot about the bug that makes sense in the first place; I mean, we're specifically telling the Win10 app to only sync using mobile data, so why would the existence of a possible WiFi connection make any difference?  But, I digress...

I don't have any real suggestions, other than the obvious, which is to verify that this issue can be replicated.  In an odd way, I hope it can, since there are few things worse than saying, "Okay, I can't get it to ever happen again, but I know it happened that one time!!!"  LOL

Happy Wednesday -- stay safe and sane!

    Dave
