[Case Closed; No Solution] Windows 10 keeps failing update to 1903

Hello,

I'm currently running 1803 and every single time I am trying to upgrade to 1903 I got a BSOD with a PFN List Corrupt.

  1. I have tried several method: let Windows Update download and install; Creating a Win10 installation Media in USB
  2. I have more than 43GB of free space.
  3. I've run File System checker, CheckDisk, and any other tool / utility

The other day I change MSConfig and select selective startup to disable other services/programs to load and after rebooting my PC couldn't even find Windows booting to a Boot Manager where only Windows 7 was an option (??????) (My original OS was Win7 but I upgrade to Win10 through Microsoft Upgrade Program) but no trail of Win7 neither. I used a third-party boot utility that fix the boot and I'm again in Win10 that keeps reminding me that I have an old version, that I would not get more updates and I have to upgrade... but the damn update keeps failing after download, reboot, install and after the 2 or 3 reboot in the installation process I got the ERROR.

I need like 2 restarts to see see the message saying is putting all back to previous state and then boot again and still ion ver 1803.

Please advice. I have tried all those canned solutions people post on forums with no difference.

    Maybe Sumit will have some comments and I will check your log tomorrow.  

    Your system is installed as Legacy.. The install will be in the configuration based on the way you boot the install media.

    The install needs to know it is not online so it doesn't fail because it can't get some online access, so if you are changing the situation after the install starts, it may not be best.

    There is a possibility that when multiple upgrade attempts have failed, there could be certain types of system corruption.  You might stand down for a week or so.  If the new build is released soon, will you be moving to that build?

    I tried downloading and installing using the .iso and disconnecting the internet after install started. It reached around 65% and then boot again to a BSOD "PFN List Corrupted" after rebooting 2 or 3 times started to "undoing changes" and got:

    0xC1900101 - 0x40017

    The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during BOOT operation.

    I'm adding the setupapi.dev.log I see a lot of error related to amdxxx.dlls.

    In addition, my BIOS is UEFI (graphical with mouse support. but when looking at system information it says BIOS mode: Legacy... I'm confused.

    I have now installed IIS and been looking at how this version works.  I think I have a DefaultAPPPOOL but the NTUSER.DAT file is in my User file and not a DefaultAppPool folder.

    There are some .exe or .msc files in the Windows\System32\inetsrv folder which may be used if they will open.  One is inetmgr.exe and the other is iis.msc.  Both open User Interfaces related to IIS.  Possibly one of them might be used to remove or reset an AppPool.

    I can't think of anything else to solve this particular problem.  Someone who knows or someone who actually has the problem needs to do the troubleshooting.

    We need someone who understands IIS.  A special user was set up so perhaps you could use the IIS Management Console to work around this.  But I really have no clue on how to fix it and cannot do any testing.

    Tomorrow, I will fully install IIS on one of my systems and see what happens.  Maybe it will set up a user as you see.  I am just afraid all the things are part of a corrupted system.

    I can't really see why installing IIS would be a problem, so maybe tomorrow I will know more..  In the old days we would reinstall software if it had not been uninstalled correctly the first time.  Reinstalling may repair the current install.

    Hi Saltgrass,

    I have no clue what is all that. How to read or interpret it. Well, kind of understand when it says error, or failed to...

    1. What do you mean by "But do you have the C:\User\DefaultAppPool\NTUSER.DAT referenced?" I can browse that path and I see the NTUSER.DAT file.

    So far, what I am trying to avoid is a reset/clean install, as I want to keep what I have.
