I just installed the latest Windows Update, but after installing it, my PC can no longer connect to wi-fi. The network troubleshooter only tells me to connect an ethernet cable and doesn't offer any solutions for how to fix the wireless connection at all. In fact, everything that had to do with wireless connections in Network and Internet Settings seems to be missing entirely. Connecting using an ethernet cable is now the only way to connect to the Internet on my PC. It's inexcusable for a Windows Update to do this to my PC.

That's because if these devices were listed as hidden, they weren't also usable. They were simply listed because a previous install and they weren't working. Once you click on "Detects hardware changes" the System check every device connected to your PC (which includes all card and adapter) and install them.
If once removed the old driver the device isn't detected, then there Is some connection problem between the card/adapter and your motherboard.
Can you explain why you had me uninstall all the hidden devices that said "wi-fi" and "wireless" and "Bluetooth"?
If also rebooting the Wifi doesn't return, you can go to your manufacturer website and download the wifi driver, then reboot and see if the wifi comes back. If not, there is some problem hardware-related.
I have had no luck at all yet either it's driving me nuts about ready to pick this up and throw it out the front door. But I don't have no money to replace it.
Now what?
