Failed automatic update - KB4489899 and KB4486553

Oh, I forgot to mention that. Yes, it's a UEFI bios and an EFI partition, and Disk 3 is GPT.

I don't remember which disk the Windows installer placed the EFI partition on initially, but it was one of the non-NVMe drives (Disks 3 and 4 are the NVMe drives, 0 is a traditional SSD, 1 and 2 are HDDs). Disks 0 and 2 are both MBR, while 1/3/4 are GPT.

I'm pretty sure the EFI partition was working correctly when it was on the other disk, I just didn't want it to be split up that way (in case I were to replace the other disk). I remember I had some trouble moving the partition, but eventually got it working, and it's been long enough that the details are fuzzy.

But my recollection is that the EFI partition was placed at the end of the original disk as well (probably because it already had partitioned space). So when I moved it to Disk 3, I just kept that the same.

So it sounds like increasing the size of that EFI partition won't help then, since 100 is standard. My next best guess is to nuke the entirety of Disk 3, unplug all of the other drives, and reinstall from scratch with only Disk 3 present to force the installer to keep everything on that drive. Unfortunately if I do that, I won't know until later whether it fixes my problem (e.g. will future updates also continue to fail?). So I'd like to try any solutions that don't involve a fresh install first, just in case that isn't going to fix the problem anyhow.

I have the same problem, but when I try to run the updater from the USB drive it gives me this error message:

"Sorry, we're having trouble determining if your PC can run Windows 10."

So far googling hasn't led me to any useful answers. There was some discussion about not having enough room in the System Reserve Partition. Disk Manager screenshot included below; I'm assuming that 100 MB slot is it, even though it's not explicitly named as such (see first screenshot in this article, where it's explicitly called "System Reserve").

Would it help if I tried to resize that partition to 500MB (or more, there's plenty of space on C: so I may just throw an entire GB at it)?

Also of note: I had some issues installing Windows on this machine, because Disk 3 (the system drive) is an M2 NVMe drive. So when I first installed, it put the 100-MB partition on one of the other traditional SATA HDDs. What I learned is that this is a bug (feature?) of the windows installer nowadays, at least with NVMe drives, and that if I reinstall I should disconnect all other drives to force it to put the partition there. 

But instead of reinstalling from scratch, I manually went in and moved that partition back to disk 3 to keep it all on one drive. I'm wondering if that's part of (or related to) the errors with windows update? This machine was built from scratch the during first week of March, so I don't have a long history of updates to compare to (though not all updates have failed, just a handful, including the one in the OP).

Any suggestions?

I would make one big partition and let Windows create smaller partitions.

I do not know about NVMe drives.

There are many differences between your "system reserved" partition & what is at the HowToGeek site. It's almost as if yours is/was an EFI system partition which a UEFI install would create. A Legacy install creates a System Reserved partition.

(a) Yours isn't Active - which is proper for EFI.

(b) It is FAT32 - proper for EFI.

(c) It is 100 MB - proper for EFI, maybe only Win 7 has that size for System Reserved.

(d) It is after C: - OK, I got that - but it isn't proper for UEFI or Legacy.

(e) It isn't designated System Reserved - which I think is not a label, but a type ID.

(1) Is your BIOS set for UEFI mode or Legacy mode?

(2) In MSInfo32 (ask Cortana), what is the BIOS Mode?

(3) Is the Disk 3 partition style MBR or GPT?

(4) What about the Disk you moved your "System Resrved " from - MBR or GPT?

To know, use the View menu of Disk Management to set the top pane to Disk View...

My theory is that you are set in BIOS to UEFI mode, & your Disk 3 is MBR. So, Windows installed your EFI onto a separate disk that is in the GPT style. When it was moved to Disk 3, it lost its Type ID that marks it EFI.

I think you should redo a clean install. Ensure BIOS is set for UEFI mode. Boot to the Installation media with the UEFI boot option. Then - at the "where do you want to install Windows" screen - delete both/all partitions on Disk 3 so that only unallocated space is left. Then select the unallocated space, & click next. The disk will be automatically converted to GPT, & you will end up with a fit & proper UEFI install. Of course, you should make a Windows system image first...
