I must be doing something wrong because I always have the update fail with some BS error like this. What are the proper steps to run this tool?

I download the tool to the desktop. I'm on an Admin account. I insert a 16GB thumb drive. I format it. I start the tool. I point it to the thumb drive. During the phase where the files are copied to the USB, I get some stupid error like this:

Why are my steps not good enough? Where is the hole in my logic? Or is this tool just written poorly. I'd like to use stronger language here as I used to have to start it all over again and burn bandwidth trying this failed endeavor over and over.

I've heard people make it work by running the tool FROM the USB. Why would that matter? I've tried to write files to the thumb drive just after the format and before running the tool to make sure I have successful writes. Doesn't help.

As a workaround today, I left the error up for a bit. Tried to access the thumb drive and it said it needed to be formatted AGAIN! So I did. Then I just opened the C:$Windows.~WS\Sources\Windows and copied the files to the drive by hand. Made the dang thing myself! WHO WRITES THIS STUFF??

Thanks, but I'm not going to have users disable a bunch of stuff in Windows every time I walk someone through making reinstall media over the phone. MS needs to fix their **** once we nail down the issue.

Roy,

Besides the USB selective suspend, there is also a general power management setting on each USB hub in Device Manager and USB Mass Storage devices.

You may try to uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

This is another reported source of USB devices issues.

That's a solid theory. I have 100Mb connection. Both flavors do take some time. My client who also regularly makes updated USB install drives has the same but only selects 64bit. During two of my failed tests, I've had the drive contents open in File Explorer. I wonder if Windows would still suspend the drive. Perhaps running the tool from the drive prevents the suspension. Next time I test with 1909 I'll write to the drive before the copy process kicks in. I'll post results here.

The behavior may change in different machines and with USB hub drivers, but some reports suggested to disable USB Selective suspend setting in control panel power option. May be even the case when you download both 32 and 64 bits because the process takes much longer before MCT tries to use the USB device, if USB goes into selective suspend it may fail accessing it when needed.

I don't have the problem in my machines, but it has been reported by some users.

You get the same error if you remove the USB device after MCT has initially found it and started the download, MCT only checks again after the files are downloaded and verified and it needs to format the USB device and copy the files over, the longer the process takes the more chances you have to enter USB Selective Suspend.

On a desktop I see only one option.On a Laptop I see 2 options for :
1. On Battery
2. Plugged in
