Media Creation Tool Error 0x80042405 0xA001B

I must be doing something wrong because I always have the update fail with some BS error like this. What are the proper steps to run this tool?

I download the tool to the desktop. I'm on an Admin account. I insert a 16GB thumb drive. I format it. I start the tool. I point it to the thumb drive. During the phase where the files are copied to the USB, I get some stupid error like this:

Why are my steps not good enough? Where is the hole in my logic? Or is this tool just written poorly. I'd like to use stronger language here as I used to have to start it all over again and burn bandwidth trying this failed endeavor over and over.

I've heard people make it work by running the tool FROM the USB. Why would that matter? I've tried to write files to the thumb drive just after the format and before running the tool to make sure I have successful writes. Doesn't help. 

As a workaround today, I left the error up for a bit. Tried to access the thumb drive and it said it needed to be formatted AGAIN! So I did. Then I just opened the C:$Windows.~WS\Sources\Windows and copied the files to the drive by hand. Made the dang thing myself! WHO WRITES THIS STUFF??

    Hopefully you resolved this. I formated my USB drive as NTFS and not Fat32 and the download worked this time to create the ISO. Hope this helps you (or others).

    It looks like everybody has a different workaround, but no real nailing of the actual problem.

    It shouldn't matter how the USB device is formatted, the Media Creation Tool 1903 reformats the USB device as FAT32 before copying over the files.

    I tried to format the device in many different ways MBR NTFS or FAT32 and even GPT FAT32, but MCT never failed for me, it converted the device to MBR and formatted as FAT32 and completed correctly.

    Good for you that it worked preformatting as NTFS, but if you check the final condition of the device created by MCT, you will find out that it is FAT32.  The reason MCT uses FAT32 is to make the USB bootable and compatible with both UEFI (which requires FAT32) and Legacy Bios machines that will accept either FAT32 or NTFS.

    Looking at your suggestions, perhaps that is why I could never make it fail on my machines, all the settings you suggest were already there by default.

    I never changed any of those. 

    Perhaps I should revert those settings one at the time to see if I can make it fail :)

    For me it never made any difference if the device was preformatted or not, MCT reformats it anyway.

    I even tried preformatting it as GPT since somebody suggested it was one case that failed, but MCT converted to MBR and formatted as FAT32 before coping the folders over.

    I just could never get the error.

    Since there are so many people reporting the error, I'd like to reproduce it, but no luck so far.

    All the suggested workarounds seems to be different and nobody really isolated a specific reason for the error. 

    There are also several marginal defective USB sticks that fail and report as unformatted even if they were just formatted. Some may work on one machine and fail on another depending on the voltage supplied by the USB port. In some cases they report a raw partition with just 64MB even if the real capacity is 8, 16 or 32GB.

    Those can fail intermittently and make it hard to isolate them.

    I just had recently a SANDISK ULTRA 16GB that failed this way, I got rid of it.

    I saw some other people reporting that the error could be caused by the power plan USB selective suspend setting which is enabled by default in windows 10 and suggest to disable it. 

    In my machine it never caused this problem, but I guess it is another possibility depending how long it takes to download before MCT tries to format and use the USB device.

    The first setting on your list did not make it fail when I turned it on.

    I assume it could make a difference depending on which folders are protected in the list.

    HELLO

      J'ai réussi avec une clé USB 8GO , avast free désactivé , formatage cle USB lent ( décocher formatage rapide ). Réussite après 5 essai et pris des idées conseils ici.

      La création du W10 sur clé USB a duré 1 heure .
