How do I disable touchpad in Windows 10?

I have a new HP laptop. But I don't like using the touchpad so I installed my mouse. With the version of Windows 10 that came with the computer, I easily found where I could disable the touchpad in Settings. But recently it upgraded to version 1809, and reverted to the setting with the touchpad enabled. Now I can't find anything in Settings to disable it anymore. I even spoke to a Microsoft technician over the phone, who was also couldn't disable it. (In Device Manager, the setting to disable the touchpad is greyed out.) So how do I disable it?

Hello,

Try these steps and see if that helps:

  1. Press Windows Key + X to open Win + X menu and select Control Panel from the list.
  2. When Control Panel opens, go to Hardware and Sound section and select Mouse.
  3. When Mouse settings window opens, you should see ELAN or Device Settings tab. Switch to it.
  4. Locate Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached option and enable it.
  5. Click Apply and OK to save changes.

If issue still persists, try this:

  1. Open Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Elantech/Othersetting/DisableWhenDetectUSBMouse key in the left pane.
  2. Change the value from 0 to 1 and close Registry Editor.

    Yeah, I tried everything here too, but still have a jumping cursor. The only thing someone suggested that worked for me was a piece of cardboard over the touchpad. And no more jumping cursors. I don't know why Microsoft hate people who want to use mice.

    I just fixed the problem by opening up the computer and unplugging the touchpad. Works just fine now. The cooling fan was making noise anyway, so cleaned that out as well. Took me about 20 minutes to permanently fix the problem. I was able to load an older driver from HP the last time a Windows update insisted on overwriting the one that worked. Tried that this instance and couldn't get the older driver to load.

    I thought about the cardboard, but that's just too "duct tape" a solution. It is easier to reverse than my fix however.

    Anybody that expects Microsoft to pay attention to issues like this is dreaming.

    Like everyone else I tried everything.  I even went to HP.com to see if I could resolve it.  I had gotten the fix there before but when I tried this time it told me I had the latest drivers and wouldn't download a fix.  I decided that I would do a system restore and pick a date before Microsoft did the last update.  I had done that before and it worked great until Microsoft did the recent update.  Well, I guess they put a hex on my computer because it apparently got hung in a loop and ran for 6 hours.  It finally said it was restarting but it didn't and said that Windows couldn't fix the problem.  I had to take it in for a specialist to see if they can get Windows to load and I asked them to fix it so that the touchpad does not work.  I'm supposed to pick it up tomorrow so we will see what transpires.  At least they haven't called me and said I need to buy a new one, my husband got that message a couple of weeks ago.  If the techs can't disable the touchpad I may have to find out how to do it internally like you did.

    Mine says Dell touchpad. I just want to disable it. It was disabled then all of a sudden it wasn't. Don't remember how I did it. I'd like to go back to OS 7, but it's been longer than 30 days.
