How do I disable touchpad in Windows 10?

I have a new HP laptop. But I don't like using the touchpad so I installed my mouse. With the version of Windows 10 that came with the computer, I easily found where I could disable the touchpad in Settings. But recently it upgraded to version 1809, and reverted to the setting with the touchpad enabled. Now I can't find anything in Settings to disable it anymore. I even spoke to a Microsoft technician over the phone, who was also couldn't disable it. (In Device Manager, the setting to disable the touchpad is greyed out.) So how do I disable it?

Hello,

Try these steps and see if that helps:

  1. Press Windows Key + X to open Win + X menu and select Control Panel from the list.
  2. When Control Panel opens, go to Hardware and Sound section and select Mouse.
  3. When Mouse settings window opens, you should see ELAN or Device Settings tab. Switch to it.
  4. Locate Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached option and enable it.
  5. Click Apply and OK to save changes.

If issue still persists, try this:

  1. Open Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Elantech/Othersetting/DisableWhenDetectUSBMouse key in the left pane.
  2. Change the value from 0 to 1 and close Registry Editor.

    I managed to kill the touchpad by going to device manager and looking at driver details. Then I deleted all the associated driver files from Windows/System that it would let me.

    Kind of a brute force method, but it worked when nothing else would. I imagine I'll have to go thru the whole drill again when MicroStupid forces an update on me AGAIN.

    They need to apply the axiom, "If it isn't broken, don't fix it"

    The last time this happened, I was able to go to HP's support site and download an older driver file, but that was a temporary fix and was a giant pain to implement.

    I'm glad you came up with a temporary fix. My settings doesn't give me a button for Disable Touchpad. Microsoft REALLY don't want people to be able to do that anymore and I wish I knew why!

    I had to go to the previous version of the Synaptics driver and reinstall it. Now I have to:

    Go to Settings>Devices>Touchpad>Additional Settings>Disable Touchpad. This is a temporary fix as it only works until the computer goes to sleep again. Then I have to go and disable the touchpad again. It's helpful to go into your display settings and lengthen the time it takes to go to sleep again.

    Hope this helps. Maybe Microsoft will come up with a real fix but I'm not holding my breath.
