How do I disable touchpad in Windows 10?

I have a new HP laptop. But I don't like using the touchpad so I installed my mouse. With the version of Windows 10 that came with the computer, I easily found where I could disable the touchpad in Settings. But recently it upgraded to version 1809, and reverted to the setting with the touchpad enabled. Now I can't find anything in Settings to disable it anymore. I even spoke to a Microsoft technician over the phone, who was also couldn't disable it. (In Device Manager, the setting to disable the touchpad is greyed out.) So how do I disable it?

Hello,

Try these steps and see if that helps:

  1. Press Windows Key + X to open Win + X menu and select Control Panel from the list.
  2. When Control Panel opens, go to Hardware and Sound section and select Mouse.
  3. When Mouse settings window opens, you should see ELAN or Device Settings tab. Switch to it.
  4. Locate Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached option and enable it.
  5. Click Apply and OK to save changes.

If issue still persists, try this:

  1. Open Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Elantech/Othersetting/DisableWhenDetectUSBMouse key in the left pane.
  2. Change the value from 0 to 1 and close Registry Editor.

    Thanks so much for that. I think I discovered before that PS/2 Mouse is actually the touchpad. So I was able to get right to the end of your instructions before getting a message that I am prohibited from deleting the drivers and I need TrustedInstaller's permission. (I hasten to add this laptop is only used by me.) SO CLOSE!

    I did a screenshot, but I can't insert it. Not sure how to save it as an image I can add here.

    Great that you found a solution! Sadly, that didn't work for me as those options are not displayed in my Mouse Properties menu. I think some of us have a version of Windows that don't have them and that's why we're tearing our hair out. Beware of updates!!

    From Mouse Properties click on Additional Mouse Options - that will bring up the device manager screen for the mouse (and possibly touchpad). Click on the Hardware tab, then highlight your touchpad and click properties. Then click the driver tab and then driver details. Leave that list of driver files open and brouse to the location of each and delete them.

    Definitely a pain in the ****, but it worked for me. Hope that helps.

    At the bottom of each settings screen is a target "Make Windows Better."  If everyone here would submit a comment about this issue, perhaps it may get fixed.  I would imagine that if you signed into your MS account to submit your comment, it would receive greater attention also.  So please, submit your dismay!

    I think everyone is on their own. I posted how I killed the touchpad to give others a possible solution. I think that deleting the driver files should work for everyone.

    You'd think MicroStupid would be able to figure out their own software and communicate with the driver developers as well as respond to their prisoners ....er, customers.
