How do I disable touchpad in Windows 10?

I have a new HP laptop. But I don't like using the touchpad so I installed my mouse. With the version of Windows 10 that came with the computer, I easily found where I could disable the touchpad in Settings. But recently it upgraded to version 1809, and reverted to the setting with the touchpad enabled. Now I can't find anything in Settings to disable it anymore. I even spoke to a Microsoft technician over the phone, who was also couldn't disable it. (In Device Manager, the setting to disable the touchpad is greyed out.) So how do I disable it?

Hello,

Try these steps and see if that helps:

  1. Press Windows Key + X to open Win + X menu and select Control Panel from the list.
  2. When Control Panel opens, go to Hardware and Sound section and select Mouse.
  3. When Mouse settings window opens, you should see ELAN or Device Settings tab. Switch to it.
  4. Locate Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached option and enable it.
  5. Click Apply and OK to save changes.

If issue still persists, try this:

  1. Open Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Elantech/Othersetting/DisableWhenDetectUSBMouse key in the left pane.
  2. Change the value from 0 to 1 and close Registry Editor.

    I am Vijay, an Independent Advisor. I am here to work with you on this problem.

    Windows Key+I > Devices > Touchpad > Toggle Touchpad to OFF

    If above doesn't work, do the above after below

    Take actions related to touchpad driver

    Windows Key+X (Or right click on Start) > Click Device Manager > View tab > Show hidden devices > Expand Human Interface devices > Right click on the touchpad listed there >

    A. Roll back the driver (You will have to repeat the steps for all entries listed including Synaptics)

    Click Properties > Under Drive tab, if Rollback Driver is enabled click it

    B. Update driver from manufacturer's website (You will have to repeat the steps for all entries listed including Synaptics)

    Go to the website of the computer's manufacturer > See if some driver is released for your model and OS > If yes, download that > In previous option, you click Update Driver Software, in place of this, click Uninstall > Install the downloaded driver > Restart your computer

    Hi I can turn it off by, Red FN and F6 at the same time, but I have to do that every day.

    I've been having the same problem and did all the above, but nothing is working. My Elan touchpad was briefly turned off when I updated the drivers, but came back on once I started typing and accidentally touched it. So it once again has the mouse jumping all over the place when I'm trying to work. I even have the sensitivity turned all the way down, but it's still super sensitive.

    There are absolutely no controls for toggling it off and on, disabling it or anything. Also, I have never been able to get my Microsoft mouse to work properly on this machine despite having installed its drivers directly from Microsoft. I've always used the wheel as a double-click, but cannot change it. Whatever function is attached to it is completely useless. I don't even know what it's actually doing other than jumping all over a page or document.

    On occasion, either or both my mouse and keyboard will suddenly stop working and the only thing that is working is my touchpad, which shouldn't even be on. I don't recall if it has also affected my full-size keyboard that I usually have plugged into it. I've only noticed these issues when working away from my desk with only my mouse plugged in. Of course, I don't touch the keypad when typing on my external keyboard.

    I have always had my mousepad turned off, so I guess it got turned back on by some update. Why is it that updates change settings on a person's computer? I never gave anyone permission to do that and they shouldn't be doing it. This is my machine and I have it set up the way I want.

    I do very detailed work with graphics and use shortcut keys to perform most functions. So I never use the mousepad and it's just being a nuisance that I can't get rid of at the moment.

    After getting the driver from the HP site installed (ELAN driver, Windows version 1809), and restarting, I still don't see a "Toggle Touchpad" in Settings. It only has "Touchpad sensitivity".

    Under "Human Interface Devices", I can't see which of the items listed is for the touchpad. Three of them say "HID-compliant consumer control device". The option to Roll Back Driver is greyed out for all of them. For all the others that have "Disable Device" available, I tried it for each of them, and don't see any changes. Nothing shuts down the touchpad. I don't know enough about what I'm doing in there to try anything else.
