Disable Windows 10 automatic restart after updates

1: Only some hate this feature and I am not one of them. So happy!

2. What update is it? Only updates like the cumulative ones and cumulative.net... requires a restart. Plus, it will only ask for a restart after the update (cumulative) is done downloading and finished installing. Actually, after restarting, then it will counts as a successful install. Normally, Windows will not ask for a restart, or automatically restart, never heard off automatically restart unless it pertains to that update. I never have that issue before.

Uh huh. No admin worth his salt would allow a box to reboot without his control. Your clearly just a random end user with a random opinion.

Very simple, PERMANENT solution in a few basic steps:

1. Create a new text file, located wherever you want, preferably hidden somewhere in the system so you don't accidently delete the file; my preference is placing it in the windows update orchestrator folder (the piece of cancerware responsible for this idiotic design flaw); this folder is located at C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\UpdateOrchestrator
2. It is unnecessary to put anything in the text file; name it whatever you want, but change the file extension from .txt to .bat
3. Open up the start menu, type in "task scheduler" and open it
4. Open the left-most viewing pane, click the drop-down icon next to "Task Scheduler Library", then "Microsoft", then "Windows", and finally scroll down near the bottom and select "UpdateOrchestrator"
5. In the top-middle pane, select the "Reboot" task and right click it, then select "Disable"
6. Right-click on the "reboot" task again, go to the "Triggers" tab, select any triggers there and delete them
7. The final, and most important step (this is the process that keeps re-enabling automatic restarts), go to the "Actions" tab, EDIT the "start a program" action, and change the default file to the text document/.bat file you created in step 1-2

That's it! So long as that file exists on your computer, it will prevent Windows Update Orchestrator from checking/initializing the "Reboot" file, the process responsible for taking your computer hostage......

Sorry, I tried all this step by step and it does not do a damn thing. The computer has rebooted multiple times since I did this with no apparent change.

I'm a software developer and this really drives me nuts about Windows.  Someone said something later in this thread that rings perfectly true.  This is something Apple would do, which is why I hate them.  Give me my options and don't force me to do things I don't want to do.

I too am a developer, and I use a Mac Book and a Windows 10 Notebook - over the last couple of years, the Mac OS has gotten better, while Windows 10 seems to have gotten worse. The Mac Book doesn't seem to force reboots when updating, which is something Windows 10 should never do either. I leave applications open overnight quite often - and I expect them to still be open when I unlock by machine. FULL STOP.

GIVE ME MY OPTIONS AND DON'T FORCE ME TO DO THINGS I DON'T WANT TO DO.... <--- MS YOU NEED TO LISTEN.

Yes, I was the one who made the Apple comment. I agree with this also. Microsoft doesn't usually do this sort of "Apple Knows Best" type of crap, but they are starting to do it now and it is really starting to get annoying. My personal reason for preferring Microsoft, Google and Android over Apple stuff is that I have more freedom and am allowed to do what I think is better, not what they thought was better. That is the strongest point of these companies (in my opinion that is). So yes, if they lose these freedoms then I am afraid I will consider them to be on the same tier as Apple. 

Obviously from my posts you can tell I absolutely despise Apple, their founder and all their policies, but I know that is the less popular opinion. Either way, they can take their black turtle neck shirts on a black background and go pound sand.

Ok now I am just aimlessly venting. I am just angry that even after doing my best to stop these forced restarts they are STILL happening. I REALLY hate coming back to my desktop to see that it restarted itself when I told it not to. And they think they are sneaky but I have many indicators of a restart such as programs changing their state, servers being back up that should not have been on, applications bring in recovery mode. They need to take this shit out.

Correct in that a lot of software do act this way, but it seems like you're insinuating that it must be done this way and that is not true.  some updates require a restart to be applied or processed because the software being updated must not be in use, which is fine, but why isn't there the ability to have it restart at the time of our choosing?  I'm a software developer and this really drives me nuts about Windows.  Someone said something later in this thread that rings perfectly true.  This is something Apple would do, which is why I hate them.  Give me my options and don't force me to do things I don't want to do.
