Kb4493509 Update Problems

I have solved the problem, I just dragged the icone from hidden to notification area

I have the same problem.

The update also broke maintenance options.

I can't do startup repair.

I can't do a reset (soft nor hard) cause it fails mid process and only uninstalls my apps, then fails and hangs till I restart it.

I can't revert to an old update because I don't have the option within the OS > settings > update and security

Trying to revert to an older update from the troubleshooting startup says there was a problem.

Trying the above steps from a recovery USB gives all the same issues / errors.

Trying to create a windows installation media usb fails, I've tried 2 USBs on 2 computers but it fails to create the installation media, I can't use an older tool because it will say it's not the latest.

I'm literally stuck with this POS update unless this update gets fixed.

Try uninstalling the update from Windows update/Update history/Unintall Updates(at the top, below the home button)

btw after uninstalling the update, windows reinstalled it but this time, I ain't facing slow system or lags in games. Don't know why though.

I didn't see the update history option before, probably missed it, however the kb isn't mentioned there.

The partial reset wipe that I mentioned also removed all trace of previous windows updates, so the latest updates shown start at 15th of April 2019 which was the last day I was trying things like system recovery/ OS reset / rollback update, but this KB came out on the 9th of April.

I guess your solution could work for people that didn't try the reset option yet though.

When I downloaded this update, my computer failed to boot but after some mucking about I was able to find a way to get it to run.

I'm by no means an expert, and your mileage may vary. I'm just sharing what worked for me, hoping it might at least let someone who's struggling get into windows so to uninstall the update and disable it.

CASE 1: You got the update, it asked you to restart but then computer fails to boot before it could complete the update

That wasn't fun... I was also unable to do any startup repair, reset, system restore, uninstall updates. Couldn't boot in safe mode either. I was pretty much resigned to reinstalling windows...

Once you hit the recovery options screen (after it fails to boot a few times or by the methods described by others) select Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options and finally Startup Settings, then Restart

Once the startup settings appear select option 8) Disable early boot malware protection (or something like it) 

Windows should then finish installing the update and boot normally.

You should probably then uninstall and disable the update as described by the prior comments, because in my case the next time I restarted I got:

CASE 2: The update is done! But windows still doesn't boot :(

Still can't do startup repair and all the other stuff, but we CAN uninstall the update from the the troubleshooter!

Once you hit the recovery options screen (after it fails to boot a few times or by the methods described by others) select Troubleshoot, then Advanced Options, then Uninstall last windows update.

Uninstall last Quality update worked for me.

I'm off to hide the update now, hopefully everything will be fine until we get a proper fix for this :)

I heard a lot of this issue and therefore I deinstalled KB4493509 although I did not have a problem and although I don't have virus scanner installed.

But after deinstalling the update and even deactivating the Windows Update mechanism altogether, the Windows Update mechanism somehow got active again and installed KB4493509 again. Then, after a very long "Restarting" screen, I ran into the same problems as other people: Windows crashed with a BSOD "critical process died" during booting and it was unable to sucessfully repair it itself! I used the recovery/troubleshooting tools to enable boot logging and tried to deinstall the last update. There I got the message, that this is not possible because an Update is currently pending. I figured out, that the file pending.xml inside \Windows\WinSxS determines, whether an update is pending or not. So I removed that file completely with the help of a console available from within the recovery evironment. After I did this, I could boot again.

During the failures, the bootlog has stopped at

BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\msrpc.sys.

Now, when everything is fine again, I can see the whole bootlog and the next line after msrpc.sys is this one

BOOTLOG_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\ksecdd.sys

so I conclude it relates to the problem.
