2019-04 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1809 for x64-based Systems (KB4495667) - Error 0x80070005

I did try, and guess what, it failed installation too!  This time there was a little better explanation as to why it failed.  It seems that during installation of version 1903 the installation tries to put any external drives, or flash drives you may have plugged into a USB port, or even an internal Hard Drives into an order: C, D, E etc.. and if they're not in order it may change them.  It gives an example of maybe changing a flash card now showing as G:\ changing it to H:, and in order not to cause any conflicts, it aborts the installation (that makes sense).   It says they are aware of the problem and will hold off sending the update to users until the problem is resolved by Microsoft.  They did have a workaround, removing all external USB Hard Drives or Flash Cards, and trying installation again.  I really can't do that because I have my external hard drives, and even my internal hard drives lettered to make sense to me, not necessarily in sequence. I have 2 internal hard drives that I use strictly for storing my home videos, and all family photos, V:\ Drive for Videos, and a P:\ Drive for my photos. External drives are set to backup those drives on a daily basis, so I would have to not only change my Drive lettering, but also redo my backup setup to agree with that change, too much work, so I'll wait for Microsoft patch.  I wonder if all these cumulative for 1809 are attempting to d

HI Gordo, Thought I would let you know I got the same message and disconnected all externals. In fact, I disconnected everything except power and still got message andwould not install. my other laptop installed with everything attached???

 

Hm okey, I will report to you this weekend, when I will try to install. I hope I will have no errors or something. I am keeping my fingers crossed for solution for your PC.

Don't remember exactly what it said, but that looks about right.  It failed after downloading, and after a fairly long install time, just like 1809 failures. I won't try again until Microsoft finds a solution, which they say they are working on, and also because during prime hours for me the download used almost 2Gig of my data.  There was a note at the bottom of the screen that said they had a solution, and it gave a number - sorry I didn't write it down - but they didn't give you any way of getting to that solution.  I guess we have to wait until they get it out to everyone.

so, your problem with upgrade now, it's problem with external drives? I didn't try to upgrade, maybe I will try this weekend. When did the installation abort? At the beginning?

The update to Windows 10 version 1903 fails if an external USB device or a SD memory card is attached to the system during the upgrade. Microsoft notes that this may also affect internal hard drives.
