This has nothing to do with BT, or other local providers. It is a global issue. I am sitting in Japan, and I cannot update with the "We couldn't connect to the update service. We'll try again later, or you can check now. If it still doesn't work, make sure you're connected to the Internet" message. **** happens, but it is strange that MS is simply ignoring this.
Windows UPDATE "We couldn't connect to the update service. We'll try again later, or you can check now. If it still doesn't work, make sure you're connected to the Internet."
What were the steps? I just updated THREE computers and NONE of them are able to connect to Windows Update. I did an "in-place upgrade" on one of them and it did not resolve the problem.
MESSAGE: "We couldn't connect to the update service. We'll try again later, or you can check now. If it still doesn't work, make sure you're connected to the Internet."
UPDATE is KB4476976 (OS Build 17763.292)
And, yes, I am connected to the internet. This is very annoying. If it is an issue/bug (and it must be) how does MS plan on rolling out a fix if users cannot connect to Windows Update? I have tried all the known fixes out there (stop/start services related to WU, run various commands in an elevated command prompt, perform an in-place upgrade, you name it. Nothing works).
Thanks.

2019-02-04T10:28:59+00:00 Hi All,
Many thanks for all your suggestions and help. I managed to manually set the DNS to 8.8.8.8, re-booted and updated. Then I set the DNS to Auto and re-booted. All was fine until the same issue came back and I had to do the same process again. Seems like this keeps coming back but hopefully the fix will eventually come from Microsoft.
My parents will have no hope of doing this and even I am not really techy and its been a battle. This is far from acceptable Microsoft and there will be a huge number of non techy people out there really stressing (anti-virus out of date) and worried.
Thanks again for all the suggestions so far, hope the permanent fix comes soon,
Tim

This issue affects Windows in several ways, including Updates and usage of some M$ store apps. I had the same problem as @JavierLai described with FH4 from last Tuesday onwards (occurring at the same time that my system refused to connect to the update server). I haven't reinstalled it yet, but the Google DNS change appears to have resolved the update problem at present. I'll report back later to confirm.

Thanks Bill and everyone else except MS, changing the DNS on both of my machines appeared to work and then I changed them back to default and still worked. I did not even flush the cache or need to reboot. MS silence on the subject has been deafening.
