Microsoft Edge and other Microsoft Store apps might not connect to the Internet after installing the Windows 10 October 2018 update

After installing the Windows 10 October 2018 update (version 1809), Microsoft Store apps are no longer able to connect to the Internet.  For example, Microsoft Edge is unable to connect to any websites, displaying the message, “Hmmm...can’t reach this page.”  Apps like Mail, Calendar, and News are not working properly.  And Microsoft Store says to check my connection.

Non-Store apps, such as Internet Explorer, are still able to connect to the Internet.

Microsoft is aware of an issue after installing the Windows 10 October 2018 update (version 1809) that prevents Microsoft Store apps from connecting to the Internet on devices that have disabled IPv6.  Microsoft is working on a solution that is planned to be released in a future Windows update.  In the meantime, you can resolve this problem by enabling IPv6:

  1. Open the Settingsapp and select Networking & Internet > Network and Sharing Center.
  2. Select the network adapter you're using (by clicking the appropriate link next to “Connections”) and select Properties.
  3. On the Networking tab, select the checkbox next to Internet Version 6 (TCP/IPv6).
  4. Select OK to save your changes.

If you still having issues after enabling IPv6, I suggest changing your network profile to Public.  Go to Settings, Network & Internet and click on Change connection properties.  Under Network profile, click on Public.

If that doesn’t work, run Network reset. This will reinstall your network adapters and set other networking components back to their original settings.  You might need to reinstall any VPN software or virtual switches after. Go to Settings, Network & Internet and click on Network reset.  Click on Reset now.

    I have IPv6 enabled, but there is no IPv6 network connectivity. Perhaps my ISP still doesn't support it on my connection? So am I **** out of luck when it comes to using Edge?

    No, there is IPv6 to IPv4 conversion ability built into most routers and/or your Windows installation will handle the conversion. It is however important to have it turned on whether it's being used our not.

    Hello - this does not work for me. IPv6 is already enabled. I also have performed the network reset and it doesn't make a difference in the long run.  (Edge works for 3-5 minutes after connecting to VPN and then stops working) The update impacted more than IPV6 I believe.

    I have two computers one running 1803, one running 1809. Without any VPN connection enabled, they both work the same way.

    However, when I connect to my company's vpn - the 1809 machine looses the ability to browse the internet with EDGE and all other UWP apps have no network connectivity. 

    When I connect to the VPN (same client version and network tunnel) on my 1803 machine - no other UWP applications are impacted and I can browse the internet with EDGE. 

    How does using VPN cause the issue for me and "fix" the problem for others if it is simply a "turn on IPv6" resolution? Doesn't make sense to me...  The VPN client is set to "allow lan traffic" as well on both computers. The only difference is the Windows 10 Version.  I am using anyconnect-win-4.5.03049-core-vpn-webdeploy-k9 to connect to the VPN. Glad to provide more information if needed. Just let me know. Thanks! 

    To follow up with further information - I was able to get Edge/Store Etc to work on my computers (Win10 ver1809) while on VPN by enabling internal network IPV6 on my home router. I still wonder however - why I did not have to do this for my 1803 computer?  Seems like the translation from IPV6 to IPV4 for UWP apps (when IPV6 isn't available) is still broken on 1809 windows 10.

    Thank you for the update. I currently have a premier support ticket open regarding this issue, and am curious to know if there is any workaround known for ipv4 only VPN connections? 

    Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client connects at ipv4 and breaks all Edge connectivity. Edge works until VPN network is connected. ipv6 enabled on all network adapters.

    Please try enabling IPV6 on your home network (LAN) router - I did that and everything started working while on VPN - its a workaround for sure - however it does work....
