Unable to update Windows 10 to v1809. Freezing at boot after reboot.

Add another MSI X99 user to the list.

PC hangs every time it boots, just as the spinning dots appear on screen. The first sign of it was before the install had even completed. I was letting the 1809 iso do its thing and it occurred on the first automatic reboot, before getting to the "we're setting things up for you" screen.

I noticed my hard drive activity led is frozen on permanently when this freeze happens.

I have to hard reset the PC and upon restarting I get the screen below. The dots start to spin for a fraction of a second before freezing. Hard drive activity led frozen on.

PC specs:

MSI X99A Krait Edition Motherboard

Intel 5930K

32 GB Avexir DDR4 2400

WD Black NVME M.2 Drive

Bios versions N4 and N9

I found a temporary solution in that I'm on the Developer Preview: I moved to the fast cycle which skipped the current October 2018 update and moved to the May 2019 one instead (18xyzz).

For that version luckily the issue has gone away.

Can confirm this works, I used the instructions here https://www.nextofwindows.com/how-to-bypass-skip-ahead-is-now-closed-windows-insider-program to join the skip ahead queue and get the latest version of Windows which is indeed working with MSI motherboard!

+1 Can confirm this Works. Had great results With this, as i got the New DirectX api With raytracing that i was after. However, the preview build seams kinda crappy to me in terms of Visual/cosmetic appearance so i hope we will get the proper update soon.

Is this any different to just installing the current fast ring build?

I've got a hp spectre x360 with the same problem as everyone here, but 18282.1000 doesn't work for me either.

I received a reply from msi that they are investigating the issue. I had that preview build for a while now and it Works fine for me. However, appart from the DirectX update I would say that there are only subtle differences between this and the last Version. You will probably be just fine holding off if you did not purchase one of the New RTX Cards from nvidia.

I have a HP Spectre, too and the newest insider isn't running as well.
