I have just updated my windows using the October update (10, version 1809) it deleted all my files of 23 years in amount of 220gb. This is unbelievable, I have been using Microsoft products since 1995 and nothing like that ever happened to me.

Files were located at C:/Users/rober/Documents/

This location is still present, with no files. All of files deleted.

I am extremely upset. Not sure what to do….please let me know.

Robert

    (2) If you never personally changed the location of your documents folder while still 1803 (either the way I did or the other way), then it must have been 1809 that did it. It must be the default setting for 1809. That is a sad circumstance, considering OneDrive is normally only 5 GB in size. Those with more than that before the move appear to lose it all.

But later in this thread AgingAardvark56 suggested to look in the online OneDrive Recycle Bin to see whether the excess ended up in there. Did you look? Right-click the OneDrive icon, & select "View online".

I did take a look, in the online OneDrive Recycle Bin. There are some files in there, but they are of the type that you would expect. Mainly overwrites for auto save games and such. Not the missing 100GB VM file unfortunately.

Sorry for the loss of your VM file. Not only does it exceed the capacity of a normal OneDrive, but it breaks this rule...

Sync your Documents, Pictures, and Desktop folders with OneDrive

"File exceeds the maximum file size: OneDrive can't sync files over 20 GB. Remove these files from the folder you want to protect and then try again."

Looks like 1809 set it as default to protect the contents of those folders. But the feature couldn't handle it when a rule was broken. And your VM file now swims with the fishes.

That was excellent to keep backups. And, right, C:\Windows.old has been skimpy since 1803.

    (1) Did you have a file or folder on the Desktop greater than 5 GB (i.e., OneDrive default capacity)?

    (2) Was anything moved to "C:\Users<Username>\OneDrive\Desktop"?

My theory is that the 1809 upgrade decided to "protect" the Desktop, Pictures, & Documents contents by moving them from "C:\Users<Username>" to same named folders in OneDrive. But, if there was a file greater than would fit - I think all was lost.

    That setting is at...

    (1) Right-click the OneDrive icon in the Tray, & click Settings. (Wait a tad for it to show.)

    (2) At the Auto Save tab, click Update Folders.

Have you tried right clicking on your folder in C:\users and checking for previous versions? Has happened to me before where user folder is empty but VSS had a copy.

Also check youre not logged into a temp profile for some reason. Happens sometimes.
