windows 10 (October 2018 update) (version 1809) deleted all my files

I have just updated my windows using the October update (10, version 1809) it deleted all my files of 23 years in amount of 220gb. This is unbelievable, I have been using Microsoft products since 1995 and nothing like that ever happened to me.

Files were located at C:/Users/rober/Documents/

This location is still present, with no files. All of files deleted.

I am extremely upset. Not sure what to do….please let me know.

    You'll have to look in Update history to determine which update completed on 8 Oct. The Feature update should be paused so it suggests a Cumulative update, unless you were unlucky and the Feature update was already downloaded and waiting to install. Look in Settings > Update and security and select View update history. You can also type winver into Search and select the top result, that will tell you the version and build.

    A system restore will not recover user documents, it is to restore windows system files and settings.

    After you have checked then post back.

    I came home last night finding my wife complaining about the communal desktop, three user accounts, all of her files were gone thanks to an update that ran the night before (October 8th). I don't understand why my files were left untouched. 

    All of her desktop files, documents, and pictures were gone. Apps were also deleted.

    I tried a restore, that didn't work.

    This is the second time it has happened in the last couple of years, the last time I had to do a  Win10 rebuild on two desktops, thankfully this time it's only one user that is affected. I should have complained about it the last time it happened. Now I will be going out to buy a back up hard drive and hope I can back up everything before it happens again only worse if all of the users lose their desktop, documents and apps! 

    Now I have to start reading and trying different suggestions on repairing the damage done by this update!

    You are welcome. Yes, good they provided an explanation & fixed it going forward. Sadness still for those already affected & w/o backups. I think all MSFT can do is recommend stuff like Recuva, but the HDD went through heavy use to do the upgrade. So, it's unlikely the space deleted files occupied will have been untouched for undelete to work.
