I find it strange as I have had a very different problem with many of my photos where some folders have doubled in size and the update created a second copy of the photos! I was able to restore my files from a backup drive so no harm done
windows 10 (October 2018 update) (version 1809) deleted all my files
I have just updated my windows using the October update (10, version 1809) it deleted all my files of 23 years in amount of 220gb. This is unbelievable, I have been using Microsoft products since 1995 and nothing like that ever happened to me.
Files were located at C:/Users/rober/Documents/
This location is still present, with no files. All of files deleted.
I am extremely upset. Not sure what to do….please let me know.
Robert

2018-10-09T02:52:50+00:00 I too lost files but not in my documents folder. I lost files in my Download folder. I had several folders there such as Temp Pictures, Temp Video and so on. Within these folders, that are still there by the way, were scanned pictures and sync video's from my phone. The files are gone. I retrieved most of them with Recuva but was not able to open the files whether .jpg, .pdf or mp4. So they are lost on my notebook.
None of these files were on my One drive. Restore with windows.old is useless as it does not bring back any of the files. 5 weeks of work gone. How will Microsoft compensate me?

2018-10-08T21:24:56+00:00 And how wrong could JennytheGeek be. Since Microsoft have now pulled 1809. Because of what you are calling a user error !! Is an error of Microsoft.
The Upgrade/Update does delete files.
Period.
