Windows 10 October update now available

I guess MS will roll out the re-release of 1809 when they are confident the fix works correctly.

If I search within OneDrive in Edge for "Known Folder Redirection - KFR" I do not get KFR in the results. I get,

Not quite the same thing. So if I search within Edge for KFR one of the results I get is,

An article by Stephen Rose dated 27/06/2018. It discusses "Known Folder Move" KFM not KFR.

Reading down the article I come to, 

When will Known Folder Move be available?

• This feature will start to roll-out this week to our Targeted Release customers
• If you are an Office or Windows insider, you may start to see it next week
• KFM will be available to all users by the end of July.

Does this mean we can choose this or is it given to us in an update?

Further down the article we read,

What is the difference between Folder Redirection and Folder Migration?

• Folder Redirection redirects a local Windows folder to an equivalent folder in OneDrive but does not migrate any content from the local folder to OneDrive. That’s why folder redirection should only be used on brand new machines that don’t have existing content.
• Folder Migration redirects a local Windows folder to an equivalent folder in OneDrive and does migrate the content from the local folder to an equivalent folder in OneDrive. Folder migration can be used on brand new or existing devices with or without content.
• In general, we suggest you use folder migration over folder redirection whenever possible.

If as he says use Folder Migration (is this folder Move[ment]) wherever possible. Why does John Cable here

use the expression Known Folder Redirection - KFR?

Apologies if this is longwinded but I am a little confused here and would appreciate if some of my peers could enlighten me please?

1/ Are there Windows 10 users that have KFR on their computers enabled? And some that have KFR not enabled?

2/ Is KFR the same as KFM in all of it's names in the articles?

3/ Was KFR given to all Windows 10 Public Release users regardless of whether they had KFR enabled?

I do not remember being asked or accepting KFR, but I did use sync your documents folder with OneDrive I think.

When I read through John Cable's blog originally I thought he was using an "in house" term that was available to users when they select to move the default file location of Documents, Pictures etc. when selecting Properties of the folder and then the Location tab. There is the option to Move files or select a new location for the files/folder.

If the user set a new location but does not accept the option to Move all existing files to the new location then the 1809 release was removing files still in the original location. I could of course be wrong as I don't know why a users would select a new location but not select to move existing files.

A user can select another HDD or OneDrive.

This function is not new and was part of Windows 7.

You would think that user files saved to OneDrive would always be recoverable by MS as part of their backup plan. As you would with Google Drive.

I was not trying to say that. I and we all should use windows update only to install updates. What I said to install manually was the feature updates[The update that changes the entire version which sizes upto 3 GB]

ONLY. What I recommended was to DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE ISO FOR THE LATEST FEATURE UPDATE FROM THE OFFICIAL MICROSOFT SITE MANUALLY RATHER THAN WINDOWS UPDATE.

But for other updates[cumulative update definition update office updates] Please use the windows update.

Windows update determines which is best for our pc and what our pc needs. I too used windows update only to install the recent cumulative update 17763.55.

Even if you decide to upgrade or install a fresh copy, YOU CAN USE THE ISO WHICH YOU CREATED USING THE MEDIA CREATION TOOL. Its very useful later to correct your pc if you had problems and errors. With that ISO you can upgrade your pc Whenever you want

That's why I recommend TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL MANUALLY ONLY THE TIME WHEN WINDOWS RELEASES ITS FEATURE UPDATE NOT FOR OTHER UPDATES

Thanks for you help regarding this. As I stated in my other post, I didn't even realize it was time for the new version to come out. So when I checked for updates using Windows Updates, it automatically started the download for the new version. I also had updates for Home and Office 2010, a new definition for Windows Defender, an Adobe Flash Player update, and the Windows Malicious Tool remover.

Since Windows Updates automatically started the download for the new version, I couldn't stop it. I also couldn't stop the other updates I mentioned. That was October 2nd, and I had no problem with the download installing including when I had to restart my laptop. I had no issues whatsoever.

If I had realized that there was a new version to upgrade to (version 1809), I might have went to the Microsoft site and manually downloaded it. However, I've never manually downloaded any of the previous Windows 10 versions. I always allowed Windows Update to automatically download when the time came. In the past, I even had notifications that said to allow Windows Update to automatically download it because it would be ready when some of the kinks had been straightened out with the new version.

This is why I allowed Windows Update to automatically download it when it was ready to download. By the time I received the Windows Update, the majority of the problems were fixed.

That's what I thought, too, when Windows Updates automatically downloaded version 1809. I figured Microsoft wouldn't be offering it if the kinks weren't fixed. In my case, I had no problems and I didn't lose any files or folders.

So, I guess I was one of the lucky ones. I also read some of the posts regarding losing files, etc. OneDrive has been mentioned several times. Well, I deleted OneDrive off of my desktop about three years ago because I don't use OneDrive. It doesn't show up at all in the C drive when I click on My Computer to go to my documents files, picture files or video files.

I decided if I wanted to use OneDrive, I could sign into online after I opened up Edge or IE11. Now this may be why I didn't lose any files. I've always used a 1T external hard drive to do my backups. I use Back up and Restore (Windows 7). I also create restore points all the time which I made it a habit a long time ago to do. I also have an extra external hard drive to keep all my pictures, videos and documents in. I figure it doesn't hurt to have two places to keep all those files saved to. It's better in the long run.

Thanks for explaining about doing it manually. I've just always used Windows Update, and have never had a problem do it that way. I've done it that way since October of 2013. I guess I've just been one lucky person! lol!

My interpretation was that the problem occurred on the devices were the user(s) had enabled, through settings, the option to "Change where new content is saved" after adding a second HDD (or a separate partition on the main drive) after the default C: drive folders had already been in use (files saved there previously) without also moving the exiting files from the default folders to the new location at the same time (or later) as well. Of course I could be wrong, however that was my take.

I received the 1809 feature update on 10/04/18 (by manually checking for updates) and all went well (no problems and no data loss). I have not (don't) use the "Change where new content is saved" setting as I choose my save-to location(s) manually (Save as) being that I have (use) multiple hard drives depending on content. (It's also been a long time habit of mine to do so (use Save as)).
