Windows 10 October update now available

 I don’t know what system and/or imbedded system you have but if you have an imbedded system, there is where the problem lays. 

What is an "imbedded" system?

I didn't know there was an 1809 which is just as well.  I recently bought a computer with 1709 on it and immediately stopped the automatic updates.  The computer performed beautifully.  Silly me restarted the automatic updates and I've had nothing but problems.  1803 keeps trying to install without success.  As though that's not bad enough, it causes the computer to run at a snails pace, programs to stop responding, and other updates such as drivers won't install because they are "waiting their turn".  I even had a firmware install waiting.  I finally got fed up and stopped the automatic updates again.  The computer is back to its usual speedy self, programs are no longer not responding, and the other updates installed.  Considering the problems of 1809, I now consider myself lucky 1803 didn't install.

Due to the language involved, I cannot in detail express my total frustration with Microsoft, not only with Windows 10 but also with Office 365.  I don't get why this company insists on making its products worse with each new version.  Sure, it always adds new bells and whistles, but what's the point if a function that use to be simple is complicated beyond recognition?  I've used Microsoft products since I bought my first PC in 1990.  I'm nearly 65 and giving serious thought to switching brands.  I don't expect perfection, but I don't expect this much frustration either.

‘ELM-01’ it’s not as drastic and dramatic as you make it all out to be, I’ve used windows longer than you have (since Windows 1 in the mid 80's) and I’ve been more than satisfied with its progress and long service of an excellent product. I don’t know what system and/or imbedded system you have but if you have an imbedded system, there is where the problem lays. Updating from one version of windows e.g. like your 1709 which btw has allot of updates (which and by the way, you have described ‘that you have turned off automatic updates') and its probably not complete, then with 1803 you must have stopped it half way and must have completely messed up the file system through the 1803 update, you are not suppose to do that, windows warns you about that and that is why its running at snail pace. I've built many computers and have used many window system and their updates, I have never ever had your problem(s) including W10 versions 1709, 1803 and 1809-17763.55 without any problems 'what so ever' and they all worked and are working perfectly, hence and that is why there is a procedure and you require certain updated files for windows update to work. Denigrating a product without knowing what you are talking about or doing is a very easy and useless thing to do, cheers!

There is a procedure and you require certain updated files for the windows update to work, you can’t just update an obsolete version like 1709 to 1803 or 1809 instantly. I would suggest that you ‘backup your existing files’ then download from ‘Create Windows 10 installation media’ at: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and create an .iso file on a USB drive and do a clean boot reinstall of Win10 and update it accordingly. Then you will have no problems and your computer will function faultlessly like many do. Denigrating a product without knowing what you are talking about is very easy!

I was not trying to say that. I and we all should use windows update only to install updates. What I said to install manually was the feature updates[The update that changes the entire version which sizes upto 3 GB]

ONLY. What I recommended was to DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE ISO FOR THE LATEST FEATURE UPDATE FROM THE OFFICIAL MICROSOFT SITE MANUALLY RATHER THAN WINDOWS UPDATE.

But for other updates[cumulative update definition update office updates] Please use the windows update.

Windows update determines which is best for our pc and what our pc needs. I too used windows update only to install the recent cumulative update 17763.55.

Even if you decide to upgrade or install a fresh copy, YOU CAN USE THE ISO WHICH YOU CREATED USING THE MEDIA CREATION TOOL. Its very useful later to correct your pc if you had problems and errors. With that ISO you can upgrade your pc Whenever you want

That's why I recommend TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL MANUALLY ONLY THE TIME WHEN WINDOWS RELEASES ITS FEATURE UPDATE NOT FOR OTHER UPDATES

Thanks for you help regarding this. As I stated in my other post, I didn't even realize it was time for the new version to come out. So when I checked for updates using Windows Updates, it automatically started the download for the new version. I also had updates for Home and Office 2010, a new definition for Windows Defender, an Adobe Flash Player update, and the Windows Malicious Tool remover.

Since Windows Updates automatically started the download for the new version, I couldn't stop it. I also couldn't stop the other updates I mentioned. That was October 2nd, and I had no problem with the download installing including when I had to restart my laptop. I had no issues whatsoever.

If I had realized that there was a new version to upgrade to (version 1809), I might have went to the Microsoft site and manually downloaded it. However, I've never manually downloaded any of the previous Windows 10 versions. I always allowed Windows Update to automatically download when the time came. In the past, I even had notifications that said to allow Windows Update to automatically download it because it would be ready when some of the kinks had been straightened out with the new version.

This is why I allowed Windows Update to automatically download it when it was ready to download. By the time I received the Windows Update, the majority of the problems were fixed.

That's what I thought, too, when Windows Updates automatically downloaded version 1809. I figured Microsoft wouldn't be offering it if the kinks weren't fixed. In my case, I had no problems and I didn't lose any files or folders.

So, I guess I was one of the lucky ones. I also read some of the posts regarding losing files, etc. OneDrive has been mentioned several times. Well, I deleted OneDrive off of my desktop about three years ago because I don't use OneDrive. It doesn't show up at all in the C drive when I click on My Computer to go to my documents files, picture files or video files.

I decided if I wanted to use OneDrive, I could sign into online after I opened up Edge or IE11. Now this may be why I didn't lose any files. I've always used a 1T external hard drive to do my backups. I use Back up and Restore (Windows 7). I also create restore points all the time which I made it a habit a long time ago to do. I also have an extra external hard drive to keep all my pictures, videos and documents in. I figure it doesn't hurt to have two places to keep all those files saved to. It's better in the long run.

Thanks for explaining about doing it manually. I've just always used Windows Update, and have never had a problem do it that way. I've done it that way since October of 2013. I guess I've just been one lucky person! lol!

I read it as MS have identified issues effecting limited number of users and pre-released fixes for Insiders to test.  Specifically it says users who had AFR enabled were effected.

 Again apologies if someone else has said this but I'm not trawling through all the posts including the "OP repeat" ones -  just read the last 10 or so.  Unfortunately my device registered with Insider has a dead battery!

I just checked on my 3rd device - it's bringing down 2018-10 cumulative for 1803 so MS are still servicing the last feature version.

And like another poster said, would like us all to limit this thread to just techie info on what is actually happening so a) no OP reposts and b) no direct complaints against MS - this is not their channel for it so you won't get official answers (those are country dependant)  That way, we can more easily read any techie updates! Just a suggestion, but thanks.
