I've just managed to solve this issue, not being able to find any solution over the Internet after several days of search, test and fail, so I'm sharing it here in case somebody is in the same situation. I hope it is not against any policy doing so. Version: Windows 10 Home/Pro x64 1803 Issue: Missing service Windows Update, as a result of deletion ( sc delete wuauserv ) . Stupid stupid action, I know, but in Home edition, I was out of ideas to avoid automatic updates not having gpo. Running services.msc doesnt show the Windows Update service. In Regedit the key[HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv] doesn't exist or is empty. Windows Store update and download also show errors error: 0x80070424 when trying to refresh updates manually 0x80070006 after a wrong .reg recovery Windows update troubleshooter, both the one in the windows settings or https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10164 , fail to run. The last troubleshooter also includes running: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth sfc /scannow I tried using a .reg available online to recover the service, located at this place: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/57567-restore-default-services-windows-10-a.html . The service was back but I have then the error 0x80070006. It might be due to being a different or early Windows version. I asked a friend with a Professional 1803 version (we also used different languages for install and run Windows) to export his services\wuauserv registry. I imported it, restarted, and my updates are back. I honestly hope it might help someone out there. Best luck if you need to use it. I wasn't able to "dodge" a clean re-install, but in cases in which Defender is totally gone and you have to go to such lengths to repair the Updates, it would be safer to clean reinstall. The back-up and restore is a bit complex when you have a lot of files and programs, but it helps a lot, in terms of system stability and functionality. If you had only the updates issue, I am glad it helped, but it was another bright person who came up with the imported registry key (you can find him somewhere on pages 8 or 9); In any case, I am glad you were able to find some help in my ramblings as well :D. Use RogueKiller, JRT, Malwarebytes(free version) for various scans, just to be safe, as those were/are serious infections. All the best! Are you receiving the Regedit message asking for confirmation to update the registry information? If you are not, you are missing some step in the process, as that has to work but in a severely damaged Windows, with no Regedit app (which would be probably beyond salvation). If you are receiving the Regedit message, accepting it to perform, and the Windows Update still doesn't show, I am afraid you probably have some active malware deleting it as is created.

I am glad to at least notify that it worked for me, as I kinda circled around the issue for a while, while originally investigating another issue. It seems that the computer was also infected and that explains a lot in terms of why wuauserv.exe was simply gone. So the infections put things into perspective lol. They should totally incorporate these fixes, yes, and I did not run that script since I thought it would over-ride your fix with the registry editor, as the script info clearly states that it resets stuff in registry as well. Updates are working now, i cleared the infections. I was under the impression that Windows Defender is a standalone antivirus, as it used to be in Win 7, and never checked, until recently, that it has been incorporated (somehow) in the Windows Firewall and that is that. Other than that, Windows is telling me that I have no security provider, no firewall, no nothing (this via the Security Center) while, there is the Windows Firewall+Defender available in Control Panel; so, I am clearly no IT expert, worked a few years in tech support, but that is a bit confusing; ultimately, yes, it is huge, this operating system and problems will appear. If you had only the updates issue, I am glad it helped, but it was another bright person who came up with the imported registry key (you can find him somewhere on pages 8 or 9); In any case, I am glad you were able to find some help in my ramblings as well :D. Use RogueKiller, JRT, Malwarebytes(free version) for various scans, just to be safe, as those were/are serious infections. All the best!

Are you receiving the Regedit message asking for confirmation to update the registry information?

If you are not, you are missing some step in the process, as that has to work but in a severely damaged Windows, with no Regedit app (which would be probably beyond salvation).

If you are receiving the Regedit message, accepting it to perform, and the Windows Update still doesn't show, I am afraid you probably have some active malware deleting it as is created.

I am glad to at least notify that it worked for me, as I kinda circled around the issue for a while, while originally investigating another issue. It seems that the computer was also infected and that explains a lot in terms of why wuauserv.exe was simply gone. So the infections put things into perspective lol. They should totally incorporate these fixes, yes, and I did not run that script since I thought it would over-ride your fix with the registry editor, as the script info clearly states that it resets stuff in registry as well. Updates are working now, i cleared the infections. I was under the impression that Windows Defender is a standalone antivirus, as it used to be in Win 7, and never checked, until recently, that it has been incorporated (somehow) in the Windows Firewall and that is that. Other than that, Windows is telling me that I have no security provider, no firewall, no nothing (this via the Security Center) while, there is the Windows Firewall+Defender available in Control Panel; so, I am clearly no IT expert, worked a few years in tech support, but that is a bit confusing; ultimately, yes, it is huge, this operating system and problems will appear. I created an account to thank for the help I got! :D
