Windows Update service missing 0x80070424 , Windows 10 Pro x64 1803 [Solved] / Error code 0x80070006 or 0x8008005

Hi all.

I've just managed to solve this issue, not being able to find any solution over the Internet after several days of search, test and fail, so I'm sharing it here in case somebody is in the same situation. I hope it is not against any policy doing so.

Version: Windows 10 Home/Pro x64 1803

Issue:    Missing service Windows Update, as a result of deletion  ( sc delete wuauserv ) . Stupid stupid action, I know, but in Home edition, I was out of ideas to avoid automatic updates not having gpo.

Running services.msc doesnt show the Windows Update service. In Regedit the key[HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv] doesn't exist or is empty.

Windows Store update and download also show errors

error:    0x80070424 when trying to refresh updates manually

0x80070006 after a wrong .reg recovery

Windows update troubleshooter, both the one in the windows settings or https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/10164 , fail to run. The last troubleshooter also includes running:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth sfc /scannow

I tried using a .reg available online to recover the service, located at this place: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/57567-restore-default-services-windows-10-a.html . The service was back but I have then the error  0x80070006.  It might be due to being a different or early Windows version.

I asked a friend with a Professional 1803 version (we also used different languages for install and run Windows) to export his services\wuauserv registry. I imported it, restarted, and my updates are back. I honestly hope it might help someone out there. Best luck if you need to use it.

Cheers,

Joseps

Do the registry import as usual: copy all the text under the line in Notepad or a text editor, save it, change the extension to .reg and run it. Accept the security warning and restart.

edit 24/12/2019, as per @k1nd3r suggestion I'm deleting an unnecessary blank right under the separation line :)

edit 16/02/2020, I missed writing down here that @k1nd3r also pointed out that the fix works in Win x64 v.1909 OSb 18363.535

edit 16/02/2020, as per  @木水- and later @Aharami reported, I am adding error code 0x80080005 here and in the title as a different one this fix might help with. Please credit them for pointing out.

edit 24/02/2020, I quote here @BogdanPurghel  : There is also a script, Reset-WindowsUpdate.ps1, available on technet.microsoft.  I'd suggest searching and trying for that if this fix doesn't work for you.

    Joseps:

Hi.  Thanks for your contribution.  Your missing windows update experience matches mine almost exactly.  I'm also using a Windows 10 Pro, build 1803 system, which I attempted to correct with the same ten forum reg key insert you cited in your posting. My effort failed, as did yours apparently, so I'm now ready to try your suggested reg change (even though I usually wouldn't be so eager to mess with my reg keys).  However, I have two questions.  You say we should copy all the text "under the line."  Would that include the heading, Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00, your introductory bracketed section, and the quotation marks around your reg text?  Second question: I understand we can then save what you've provided in Notepad as a .reg file, and that we should then "run it" -- but what would "run it" entail, please (or: how do we run it?)?

Thanks for whatever help (suggestions or clarifying statements, etc.) you can offer me.  Either way, your proposal seemed to be immensely helpful, and even a relief, to many forum participants.  yay, to you.

I look forward to your reply.

    --Janet

I have checked, wuaueng.dll file present in system32 folder.

I thought may be after upgrading windows 10 Home single version with the latest version, this issue maybe resolved, but issue still present. just now imported register entry in "regedit" and rebooted laptop, checked in "services.msc" i can see "Windows Update" service but when I tried to start this service I got below error.

If anybody have installed windows 10 Home single on personal laptop, Please export wuauserv register entry from "regedit". please share with me.
