I think what you said is that the creation of the system image works OK, but saving files by the "let Windows choose (recommended)" doesn't. 

So.…...there is an error in the Backup App as released by Microsoft. 

Will they fix it, or are we being forced to use third-party apps to effect a satisfactory backup solution??

I agree with your comment concerning Microsoft fixing the bug.

If not going to do this, Microsoft should make a definitive position clear as to what their intention is for how their users 

are to develop a safe and secure backup strategy for their system.

Wow, thanks for that information!  This is a workaround for me on the machine that uses the attached USB drive for backup, since I can use File History to do my daily backups.  I'll try it on the machine that uses the NAS backup and see if it's a workaround there as well.

Of course, I'd still like to see Microsoft fix the bug so that the full feature works.  But having the ability to do weekly system image backups without using third-party solutions is very helpful, so thank you for posting your solution!

With all respect, it's actually not such a revelation that the system image backup can still work. It actually works already by default until it reaches the user files back up, where it stops and throws that error.

You can see the system backup was made if you look in the folder "WindowsImageBackup" on that drive.

I can't understand why microsoft keep making new redundant features nobody needs, while at the same time deprecating super necessary features such as windows 7 backup. File history is not a suitable replacement, as you can't select the necessary content you need to be backed up.

I really hope they fix that stupid bug.

Also, instead of keep adding useless features, here is a necessary feature that should have been added years ago:

"Boot fixer" - something that analyzes stuff, and fixes whatever could be removed from the boot sequence so it will boot faster.

My boot is very slow - something like 20 circles at the windows logo, 7 more circles afterwords and another 20 seconds or so on the welcome screen. I already removed everything isn't needed from the startup screen but nothing will make it quicker.
