Bluetooth volume broken after Windows 10 1803 update

I have a Samsung DA-E670 bluetooth(BT) speaker that I use as my main speakers connected via BT. After the Windows 10 version 1803 update recently, I can no longer adjust the volume of these speakers from the master mixer in the taskbar.

The slider moves but the volume doesn't change unless it's slid to the minimum then it mutes.

The same issue happens on my laptop after this 1803 update.

However, on my new Sennheiser headphones the behaviour has changed differently. Adjusting the volume on the headphones built-in volume control, changes the Windows main mixer volume. I can learn to adjust to this change but I would need to be able to control the volume of my Samsung speakers via Windows like before.

My research points to something about a mismatch of Bluetooth profiles. Has anyone had this issue and if so, are there any work arounds or fixes?

Also, I have been in touch with Microsoft support chat a bunch of times (5 or 6 times) and they have tried everything from;

Re-installing drivers

Updating drivers

Installing bad drivers, breaking the BT

some weird registry and other actions I don't know the details about

Hello guys, 

I also have a problem with my Edifier R2730DB, however I solved the problem by changing a value from 0 to 1 in the registry. 

Follow the steps from this post:

"You should try this fix It worked to me:

  1. Open Windows Registry (regedit.exe).
  2. Jump to  Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Bluetooth\Audio\AVRCP\CT
  3. Create  REG_DWORD  DisableAbsoluteVolume and set it's value to  1.

Important: You need to restart your PC for changes to take affect.

    Thank you for the detailed information. I know that this would feel farfetched but let's try one last thing. This time, let's look for the driver using the Bluetooth's hardware ID and install it with the compatibility troubleshooter. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Device Manager, click Bluetooth.
    2. Right-click the Bluetooth device and select Properties.
    3. On the Details tab, click the drop-down menu under Property and select Hardware Ids.
    4. Under the Value space, look for the item that has the longest as that's usually the hardware ID of the device. Right-click and select Copy.
    5. Paste the hardware ID using any search engines you want to use and look for its drivers. I usually use this format when searching "driver for <hardwareID>. "
    6. After getting driver, uninstall the current Bluetooth driver*.*
    7. Then, follow Andre Da Costa's instructions on this article under Using Compatibility Mode to Resolve Driver problems.

    After installing the driver in compatibility mode, see if the issue gets resolved.

    Update me if there are improvements and if it's still the same, I'll make sure to update this to the appropriate channels.

    Audio is still not adjustable using Win10 volume slider when connected over bluetooth.

    I too have been experiencing this since the 1803 update. This issue did not exist before the update.

    I have been watching this thread and other threads on the same subject, waiting for a fix, but I have decided to chime in after doing some testing. I am by no means an expert, just a hobbyist.

    I have tried two different blue tooth adapters, and two different BT speakers, using two different machines running 1803. All have the same volume slider behavior (not working). I took it a step further and tested an insider build, same behavior.

    Reverted to my 1709 Hard disk image, and the volume slider works as it is supposed to.

    I am sure it is not a coincidence that 1803 has some major changes to the audio settings; moving them into the settings app, etc. One small thing I noticed (and may be a stretch, but hear me out) but 1803 sees and labels my speakers as "headphones". Maybe 1803 views most blue tooth audio devices as "headphones" with hardware volume buttons? Prior to 1803 they had a "speaker" icon in device properties and were labeled as such, in 1803 the icon is a pair of headphones.

    As I was typing this I had an idea to try a 3rd blue tooth speaker (older Anker SoundBlock). This one was detected by 1803 as a speaker (speaker icon in the device properties) and amazingly, the volume slider works. So I am beginning to think this problem has to do with what windows sees the device as (speakers or headphones). I'm sorry if this had already been suggested, but I haven't read all replies in detail, and hope this helps in some way.

    The volume now works but new problems have been introduced.  

    So this is what I did:

    The Bluetooth device has two devices for it. In my case;

    [Samsung] W_Audio E5290D

    [Samsung] W_Audio E5290D Avrcp Transport Adapter 

    Googling the first device Hardware ID brought back no results only two dodgy looking ads that wanted me to install a driver installing program. So I had to leave that one. 

    For the second one (Avrcp ... ) I found a driver from 'Driver Pack Solution'. 

    I uninstalled both drivers and installed the one I had with compatibility mode with the below options; 

    >Troubleshoot program 

    > What problems do you notice? I picked 2 boxes 'Program worked in earlier version ...' and 'I don't see my problem listed'

    > Which version of Windows did it work? I picked 'Windows 7' 

    > Test Program 

    > Installed both drivers back and volume starts working immediately 

    > Next to save changes

    While the volume is now working for the Samsung speakers, new problems have been introduced listed below:

     - Unable to disconnect/reconnect any Bluetooth device, pressing the disconnect button causes the device to disconnect but windows shows it  "couldn't disconnect", then reopening the dialog window shows all devices connected even when the Bluetooth device is physically powered down. No way to connect again without PC restart. Windows says two Bluetooth devices connected when only one or none are powered on and connected but two devices are paired.

    • Turning Bluetooth OFF causes immediate BSOD; (Stop Code: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL) What failed? bthport.sys. This used to happen before on the old drivers but I feel it's happening more now. I would maybe create a different thread for this alone.
    • Other Bluetooth devices like my PXC550 do not act like behaviour case 2 anymore. They act like behaviour case 1 (see previous post of mine)

    This works as a temporary 'work-around' so long as I have no need to change connected Bluetooth device or have to turn off Bluetooth from windows. The ideal situation would be how Google solved it. Independent volume controls for speakers like my Samsung (Behaviour case 1) and unified volume like my PXC550 is capable off (behaviour case 2). 

    I've lost the ability to connect to my PXC550 headphones without, powering down the Samsung > restarting the PC > powering up PXC550. I used to be able to do this in real time by disconnecting one or connecting the other.
