Bluetooth volume broken after Windows 10 1803 update

I have a Samsung DA-E670 bluetooth(BT) speaker that I use as my main speakers connected via BT. After the Windows 10 version 1803 update recently, I can no longer adjust the volume of these speakers from the master mixer in the taskbar.

The slider moves but the volume doesn't change unless it's slid to the minimum then it mutes.

The same issue happens on my laptop after this 1803 update.

However, on my new Sennheiser headphones the behaviour has changed differently. Adjusting the volume on the headphones built-in volume control, changes the Windows main mixer volume. I can learn to adjust to this change but I would need to be able to control the volume of my Samsung speakers via Windows like before.

My research points to something about a mismatch of Bluetooth profiles. Has anyone had this issue and if so, are there any work arounds or fixes?

Also, I have been in touch with Microsoft support chat a bunch of times (5 or 6 times) and they have tried everything from;

BT troubleshooter

Re-installing drivers

Updating drivers

Installing bad drivers, breaking the BT

some weird registry and other actions I don't know the details about

Hello guys,

I also have a problem with my Edifier R2730DB, however I solved the problem by changing a value from 0 to 1 in the registry.

Follow the steps from this post:

"You should try this fix It worked to me:

  1. Open Windows Registry (regedit.exe).
  2. Jump to  Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Bluetooth\Audio\AVRCP\CT
  3. Create  REG_DWORD  DisableAbsoluteVolume and set it's value to  1.

Important: You need to restart your PC for changes to take affect.

Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and unmark them if they provide no help, this will help others who are looking for solutions to the same or similar Problem." (Check last post of the page).

Hope this solves the problem for you too. Looking forward to actually get a fix from Microsoft with next updates ...

I appreciate everyone's cooperation by providing me further details. I'd like to get deeper with the isolation so that we can be sure that this really caused by an update. Please do the following methods:

    1. Check the Bluetooth device if it works with other device. Try it on a smartphone or headphone and see if there would be any issues.
    2. Connect a headphone, or speaker on your PC and see if it produces any sound. This is to make sure that there are no issues with the device's hardware.
    3. Run the Audio troubleshooter just to be sure that this is not connected with the Bluetooth issue. To run the troubleshooter, select the Start button, type Troubleshoot, and then select Troubleshootfrom the list of results. Select Playing Audio > Run the troubleshooter.

After doing steps and the issue still persists, let me know so I have a further look on what to advise you guys next.

I'll be waiting for your updates.

Ever since the 'FORCED UPGRADE' to Windows 10 Spring Update 1803 my Bluetooth audio does not work. I can pair to a Bluetooth device but cannot connect.  Reverting back to the previous build is broken too, imagine that...  I do not want to refresh Windows 10 as I will lose all my installed apps and settings in the process. it's been over a month since this build was pushed and Patch Tuesday has come and gone with no fix released. I see threads like this all over the net about this Bluetooth Audio issues and MS giving lame non-working suggestions how to fix what they broke!

Is Microsoft really looking into this issue or are working on adding more telemetry into Windows 10 to spy on its users! This has become the worst OS since Windows Vista!

STOP WITH THESE FORCED BUILD UPDATES FFS! Let us decide if we want them or not.

    Hey

    Here is the update.

    1. I paired the bluetooth speaker with an Android phone (Google Pixel 2, Android 8.1). Changing volume works perfectly.
    2. I connected headphones on the front and rear ports. They do work too. Furthermore, I directly connected the bluetooth device via AUX to the PC. Using AUX, the volume slider works. If bluetooth is being used, the volume slider is broken.
    3. troubleshooter does not find any problems except this: volume is too low (since 1 is as loud as 100, I had it set to 1). Changing this using the troubleshooter does not cure problem either.

    verdict: The update is faulty

I concur with Peter's findings to your questions. But I would add the following:

    I identify two acceptable behaviours and one unacceptable behaviour. For reference, I will define them below;

Use case 1: Bluetooth speaker and media device have independent volume controls. (I.E, volume on phone is min + volume on headphones are full = low volume. volume on both devices need to be on full for max sound)

Use case 2: Bluetooth speaker and media device have synced volume that can be controlled via either device. (I.E, when the volume on headphones are changed, the volume on the PC changes dynamically in real-time. Volume can be seen visually changing)

Use case 3: BROKEN - Volume on Bluetooth headphones can be changed to alter sound but volume bar on media device moves up and down without affecting the sound levels unless the slider is down to min, then sound is muted.

Samsung DA-E670 BT speakers with PC (Dell desktop or Asus laptop) BEFORE 1803 update = Use case 1

Samsung DA-E670 BT speakers with PC (Dell desktop or Asus laptop) AFTER 1803 update = Use case 3 !!!

Sennheiser PXC550 headphones with PC (Dell desktop or Asus laptop) BEFORE 1803 update = Use case 1

Sennheiser PXC550 headphones with PC (Dell desktop or Asus laptop) AFTER 1803 update = Use case 2

Sony Ericsson MW600 headphone with PC (Dell desktop or Asus laptop) AFTER 1803 update = Use Case 2

Samsung DA-E670 BT speakers with Samsung Galaxy S6 (Android 7.0) = Use case 1

Sennheiser PXC550 headphones with Samsung Galaxy S6 (Android 7.0) = Use case 1

    Sennheiser PXC550 headphones with Nexus 7 2013 (Android 6.0.1) = Use Case 2

    Samsung DA-E670 BT speakers with Nexus 7 2013 (Android 6.0.1) = Use Case 1

    Sony Ericsson MW600 headphone with Nexus 7 2013 (Android 6.0.1) = Use Case 2

Sony Ericsson MW600 headphone with Samsung Galaxy S6 (Android 7.0) = Use Case 1

Use case 1 and 2 are acceptable but Use case 3 is not.

It is worth noting the same thing happened last year with my Nexus 7 after a major update that introduced this (Use Case 2) behaviour. It behaved like Use Case 3 with my DA-E670 speakers but after a while Android fixed it, now it acts like Use Case 1.

When PC is disconnected from BT device, sound is played from inbuilt speakers. Headphones connected Desktop or laptop work as expected.

All sound and Bluetooth troubleshooters have been run, multiples times.

    I have latest update today.

I should work for MS at this rate, now I need to reset all my BT paired settings. Hope all this helps.
