"Installed" fonts not showing up in Windows Fonts folder

Here is a solution that worked for me. 

When I downloaded the font it had a little lock symbol on it - I had to change file ownership to personal and then reinstall. Now it works for me 

I've been having the same problem, specifically I installed a free font (sportscenter) which I could use in Adobe Illustrator & Word but not in InDesign. The font was not visible in the font folder *except* when I accessed the fonts folder with a command prompt: %windir%\fonts

There I could *see* the font file, but the function was the same. I deleted, reinstalled--nothing worked.

Here's what did work for me:

In Illustrator and selected a piece of text with the font applied, and added the character style to my CC library. Back in inDesign, I applied the character attribute to my text--but instead of it updating to sportscenter, it was updated to the Adobe font "eurostile," which is identical in appearance to sportscenter. Eurostyle, interestingly, is also not available for use in Illustrator. It's not your usual system font match: It is the exact same typeface. I've concluded that the two fonts are in conflict somehow. In any case, I accomplished my goal. The font is looks exactly the way I want it to, just with a different name.

Did you try uninstalling your printer and its driver? Then restart and they will automatically reinstall. This worked for me.  I found somewhere online that Word looks at your printer to decide what fonts to use.  Good luck!

Good afternoon. I have been having this issue and it was when I was investigating it that I saw that many people seem to have it yet there are very few solutions. My colleague and I have found one that worked for us.

In our instance the issue was caused by a missing Font (Arial Narrow) but corrupt fonts can cause the same issue. We tracked this down by examining the make up of the email which opens up in a notepad file.

Stop and disable the following services:

Windows Font Cache Service

Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache 3.0.0.0

Reboot the machine otherwise the next steps won't work.

Browse to**:**C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local and delete any .dat files that start with "FontCache" and also make sure the "FontCache" folder is empty.

Browse to the PC from another PC on the network and delete the offending fonts from C:\Windows\Fonts. It won't work if you try and delete it/them from the same PC. It'll give you an error message about how it's a "System Font" and "can't be deleted".

Once you've removed the fonts reboot the machine, Enable and start the two services above that you stopped and then open Word. Select your desired font from the drop down menu. If there's a cloud symbol there that means your font isn't installed and will be installed from the cloud. Select it and begin typing. That should be it!

Unfortunately, none of the previous answers solves my problem.

I try to install fonts. According to Windows that also works but I cannot see the installed fonts in the Windows Fonts folder and neither do they show up in Illustrator. 

When I copy a font file into the Windows Fonts folder it says "The "xxxxxx" font is already installed. Do you want to replace it?" - I click yes, but still - the font does not show.

It's not a problem of the font file as it was working previously. Same happens to hundreds of other fonts. Says they are installed but they don't show and they are not selectable in other applications.

This was happening to me, too. As a workaround, try copying the fonts directly into your InDesign fonts folder on your C drive, and they should show up. 

Program Files \ Adobe \ Adobe InDesign \ Fonts
