Updating to Windows 10 version 1803 freezes on the Windows logo upon reboot

I've tried using Windows Update, repairing Windows update, using Windows Media Tool to create a bootable USB for a clean install, unplugging all peripherals including mouse and keyboard, reseting BIOS settings to defaults. No matter what I try, when booting to setup after installation through Windows Update, or when booting from the USB ISO the system hangs on the Windows logo for hours with no spinning dots and no hard drive activity. All I can do it hit the reset button. When trying to install via Windows Update and having to do a hard reset when it locks up, the resulting error code I find is 0xc1900101.

    isn't it a bit overkill to use VMWare (I guess it's vSphere Hypervisor?) on a desktop board? VirtualBox seems as more obvious choice to me.

    VMware Workstation is what I use to test on various hosts - particularly easy to keep "virgin" systems. It runs nearly as fast as a native system, since I use SSDs. I also have customers that use VMs, so being able to test there is a plus.

    As for VitualBox, tried it once, seemed fine. VMware people have a decade of experience over them, plus, well, it's Oracle, so you never know when they'll pull back on the access like they did with Java.

    Hi, yeah, I do use VMware. I tried turning VT-d back on, but Windows simply spun again. Were you able to reenable VT-d on your machine?

    In fact, I'm now finding that 1 out of 2 boots hangs. It boots reliably to Safe Mode.  Have you encountered this situation? Thanks!

    Also, had to reinstall Chrome as whatever was in this release blew it up too. It's one thing to force users to change their setup when there's a major new release (Windows 7 -> 10, for instance). It's another to break things willy-nilly during an update!!!

    just an observation - tried the following scenario:

    do hibernate, resume, enter BIOS, enable VT-d, save & exit, continue boot - success (no freeze).

    Hello I have i7 920 with ASU P6T2 Deluxe v2 and Windows 8.1 with 1202 BIOS version and I'm not able to install windows 10 last release.

    After first reboot I have the logo and a dark windows appears a fraction of time and a message follow a fraction of time (impossible to read it's too quick) and after the PCreboot ...

    How have you installed windows 10 on your PC with this old motherboard please ?
