file explorer not showing thumbnails for onedrive folder

Many of my images have no thumbnail in my users one drive folder, even for files that are downloaded to my pc.

Full path C:\Users\myuser\OneDrive\Pictures\Camera Roll

How can I fix this? There was a time when thumbnails always worked for this folder, but I can't remember when this stopped working, it's been a couple/few weeks perhaps.

Also, why are some of the images near the end only available online. In my one drive settings this entire folder is set to sync.

I had the same issue and to fix it I went into the settings of the One Drive app and disabled (untick) the Files On Demand service then hit OK. Then after a restart of the PC all thumbnails within my One Drive folders had returned.

No I idea why this works but it did for me and hopefully will do for you also.

    Hi E,

    Yes large Icons is selected in the view layout, as you can see in my screenshot, some do show the thumbnail.

    In steps 2 and 3, those are system defaults but I double checked anyway and they are still configured that way.

    I tried to uncheck app and recheck apply but it didn't help.

    This Guide above is impractical! On a Windows 10 Tablet, 2 in 1 or Laptop with eMMC or SSD Storage. I have 1TB available on OneDrive. I can't save 1TB on a 128 GB SSD. This is not a Fix!

    I was trying to resolve the same issue and from the sounds of it your solution means that I would have to download all my files from my OneDrive onto my local hard drive. 

    I'd really prefer to be able to use the On Demand as this feature allows me to "offload" files into the cloud to save space on my laptop.

    Hoping there's another solution here.

    So  - only those who say "wonderful" are noticed.

    Those of us who say "no, that does not work" are ignored.

    HELLO?????

    This problem is extremely complex, may be caused by different issues on different machines with different configurations. Here's what I found on another forum thread that worked on my machine

    :

    "what worked for me is to run OneDriveSetup.exe from the

    C:\Users<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\Update  folder."

    I had to do this twice, and also alter my Files On Demand setting, but the OneDrive thumbnails came back and have worked OK for a couple of weeks now.

    The advice from the so-called experts or MVP types from MS in these threads is terrible, and usually involves running a long difficult & convoluted Windows "repair" sequence that does not help. The solutions are usually much simpler.
