Photoshop RAM error in the 1803 update of Windows 10

When you want to use a tool in Photoshop, you might face with an error which tells you there's not enough RAM to operate.

Don't worry it doesn't mean that your system is an old grandpa and you need to upgrade its RAM, as I have a Surface Pro 4 with 8GB of RAM.

The first (not-working) solution is to go to Preferences > Performance in the Photoshop Edit menu.

But it'll prompt you that a value between 8 and 96 required so you won't be able to fix it with the Performance tab of the Photoshop...

The only %100 working way you can try is to simply using the Registry Editor in Windows 10:

Search for "regedit" via Cortana.
Then go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" > "Software" > "Adobe" > "Photoshop" > "120.0" (ONLY If you're using Photoshop CC 2018. The folder name would differs by different versions of Photoshop)
Here Right-Click on the "120.0" folder and go to "New..." then choose "DWORD (32-bit) Value"
When you want to type a name for the newly added item exactly copy-paste the following name:

OverridePhysicalMemoryMB

After creating the mentioned item, Right-Click on it and select "Modify..."
In the opened window, firstly make sure that Hexadecimal is active and then enter "2400" as the Value data (For a device like Surface Pro 3, you would check it on Decimal and also set "24000" for value).

Done!

Photoshop won't tell you "there's not enough RAM" or "a value between 8 and 96 is required" anymore.

Your problem is fixed and you don't need to continue reading, else than you want to know why I'm posting it on Windows forum not the Adobe forum.

Because it's not a problem with Adobe. Why?

It's a long story.

I was using Photoshop CC 2017 for about one year on my Surface Pro 4 without any problem.

But after I updated its Windows 10 version to 1803 from 1709, I experienced the issued bug.

Firstly I upgraded my copy of Photoshop to CC 2018, hoping the problem to be solved by doing that.

But the problem exist even after spending money...

So I tried a very deeper solution then.

I reset my PC using the "recovery image .zip" file which is officially released for every single Surface device model.

And I totally cleaned it also (just like that I want to sell it to someone else 😁 lol) just in order to ensure that I'll receive a very fresh version of Windows 10 afterwards...

The problem has been fixed!

I mean that I installed Photoshop CC 2018 again on it and there was no RAM error at all.

But I want you to pay attention to version of Windows 10.

My freshly installed Windows 10, was 1703 not 1803.

As I updated Windows 10 to 1803 just a few hours later than I checked that the RAM error of Photoshop is fixed in 1703, the error came back again!!!

At that time, I understood that there's a serious problem with the 1803 version of Windows 10 which cause Photoshop CC 2017&2018 to face with a RAM error as Photoshop works fine with the 1703 or 1709 version of Windows 10.

As I truly love Windows and Surface devices, so I don't want them to be infamous because I saw the exact same problem in my classmate's device.

This is the only reason why I took this time to report this bug.

Thank Microsoft team to at least hearing about these bugs...

Maybe i wasn't precise, but i have this issue with Photoshop elements 2018 only (MS store version).

I've experienced this bug sometimes (JPEG couldn't be opened by the Photos app).

In most cases, its reason is the bad installation of a new major Windows 10 update before than anything else. Which luckily would be fixed too by further updates.

But in some cases, there's a problem with the Photos app particularly.

In order to ensure that your Photos app is working properly just follow these steps:
- Open the Settings app then go the Apps section.
- Find the Photos app between all of them (A-Z sorted) in the list and then touch it.
- So the Advanced Options phrase will be shown. Then touch it to enter the Advanced Options page.
- In the Advanced Options opened page, firstly scroll down and Terminate the app.
- Then touch the Reset button.
By doing this, the Data of Photos app will be deleted and it would take a few seconds.

This solution might help you to solve the problem. If it didn't, so go to Store and try to use the Reinstall option which fixes common bugs within an app.

I'm sorry if the solution didn't work for you; and thanks for your additional information about the exact version of Photoshop you have...

But if we wanna go though it deeply, actually this topic isn't for your problem at all and it means that I'll have to add some corrections to it.

Adobe Photoshop Elements which is came from Microsoft Store, is known as an Universal App.

While our topic in this discussion is about for Adobe Photoshop CC which is a traditional Desktop Software.

They're two totally different types of apps and you can't solve an UWP app with a Desktop Software solution.

I want you to understand this big difference, dear Pawel.

However, the best way that you can try to fix your problem is firstly reporting it on the Microsoft Store.

When we're talking about UWP apps, they're modernized apps. it mean that developers of them give more attention to the comments and feedback than the traditional Desktop Software.

I want to say that if you give Adobe a feedback about a bug in a traditional Software like Photoshop CC, it would takes a lot of time to even they read your feedback at first.

But if you give the same feedback through the Store they'll pay attention to your feedback hundred times more than a feedback about a traditional Desktop Software...

This is why I'm firstly wondered if there's any unfixed bug in a Store app.

Anyway, so go and comment on the Store page for Photoshop Elements and give Adobe a feedback about your experience with the issued bug before than doing anything else.

After all, try to search for a fix more than this; but this time with a "UWP" phrase in your searches.

So you won't trouble with a not-working solution for Photoshop Elements Universal App, which belongs to Photoshop CC Desktop Software like our discussion.

Hello.

Sadly this "registry editor" guide doesn't work for me.

I have Surface Pro 4 and Photoshop Elements 2018 from Microsoft Store.

In this case there is no "Adobe" and following folders in advised path: "HKEY_CURRENT_USER" > "Software" > "Adobe" > "Photoshop".

Any help guys? :)

Oh. And one more problem.

After updating Windows 10 to 1083 I can not open any JPEG file. When I try to open any jpg file there is information about "Could not complete your request because of an problem parsing the JPEG data".

So Photoshop Elements 2018 is totaly useless now.
