Microsoft XPS Document Writer Download for Windows 10

A combination of a recent Windows update and Quickbooks update has left us without the XPS Document Writer, which is necessary to save or print invoices from Quickbooks.

The XPS Document Writer is not an option when trying to install a new printer and neither the XPS Service nor XPS Viewer are options listed in "Turn Windows features on or off."  I suspect we need to reinstall the Writer, but I'm unable to locate a version for Windows 10.

We have already tried a system restore, but this failed to resolve the issue.

The only link I have found: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=11816 is not compatible with Windows 10.

Where can I locate the XPS Document Writer for Windows 10?

Hi Katherine,

Hit Windows key + R together, enter: optionalfeatures

Just check once more to see if the "Microsoft XPS Document Writer" exists, at least it pops up on my Windows 10 with 1803. Check that if not already, click OK. Now we need to bring back the XPS Viewer.

Go to Start, look for "Apps & features", then click that. In the new window under Apps & features, click Manage optional features. Click "Add a feature", then look for XPS Viewer, and click the Install button that pops up.

If this doesn't work at all, please provide me with your Windows 10 edition (Home, Pro, Enterprise), and I can look into this further for you.

Let me know.

>>Found this link - worked for me! Allowed me to reinstall XPS Document Writer.<<

https://superuser.com/questions/1192920/how-to-force-xps-service-installation-on-windows-10

This worked perfectly for me. Downloaded the zip file and followed the KB instructions. Worth repeating here:

File download found here -- just click download: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8Zv87UX9gSKLV9ud3c1ZFAtcjA/view

Instructions: I followed them with following exceptions -- ignore Windows 7, worked for Windows 10. I could not remove the XPS printer because it was not there. I just ignored that and went to Add printer. All else I followed and XPS was installed.

Actually the best solution was to get Microsoft XPS Document Writer from Windows 7 re install it from there. That was the problem. A Windows 10 update took it off my machine and that is a important part of Quick Books . You can't move PDF files without it!

I've been tracking this for a while.

It seems this is a known issue with Windows

    See here:

    https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-us/other-questions/qb-printing-issues-xps-and-print-to-pdf-corruption-any/00/574847#

Seemingly, no one knows **** is going on. And when it comes to trying to get Microsoft to fix an issue, good luck. They're on their own timeline and won't hustle for anyone. They may never fix it.

You can try using Microsoft Print to PDF to create your PDFs

    https://pdf.wondershare.com/pdf-knowledge/microsoft-print-to-pdf.html

Or use a third party PDF printer

    https://www.dopdf.com/

If it's not obvious, these aren't really printers, but rather virtual printers that create a PDF file.

I have the same question as to how to obtain xps document writer - have been on the phone with both QuickBooks and Microsoft for 3 days and still no anwsers

I can not email statements to customers or paystubs to employees

I have updated QB and Adobe, ensured files have full control, run all the repair tools, etc. etc.

I receive the following msg when opening up QuickBooks - QuickBooks detected that a component required to create PDF files is missing.  This may cause an issue with printing transactions, emailing forms, or saving anything as a PDF file inside of  QuickBooks  Desktop.

When  trying to send statements -  Nothing to print.  No statements were created. There are no outstanding invoices, credit memos, finance charges or statement charges for the date range or additional options you selected.

I certainly can not be the only person experiencing this issue and it is severely affecting our company's cash flow.  Anyone have a suggestion fix?
