Windows 10 1803 update gives this message  0xc1900101. Then windows update starts the download again.

Then it's message 0x80070005.

How to escape from this.Win10 pro, 1709

Hello,

0xC1900101 is generic error code and points to driver incompatibility while you opt to upgrade. You need to read the dialog, which likely came before this error message. There should be additional information with the detail. The dialog will tell you what devices are having a problem. That is the one you need to get a new driver for. 

Once you fixed the driver(s) mentioned with detail, the error will no longer persist.

    Yes, last night I had to admit defeat on the upgrade route and undertake a clean install manually, which went flawlessly. It was just a matter of afterwards of updating a few drivers following one warning, and all is well with full internet and intranet functionality (to make it all sound very grand and technical). The past history of updates has also been removed from the appropriate page.

    I followed the 'no installation key' route, and it installed utilising my digital licence/license key (apparently). I didn't hear from Cortana, who must have been on a comfort break, but I did have to supply my router password, as usual. I will see what Greg has to say on the subject of activation.

    The mistake I made initially was not to have removed the old partitions from the hard disk before commencing the installation, which appeared to have caused the 'partitions are wrongly formatted' error messages.

    Great news - overjoyed to hear it. (Forgot to say, I had a couple of Realtek drivers to update afterwards too.) Good going. That's right - as Greg often says - it makes a big difference to delete all the existing partitions & have MSFT create them fresh. Of course, you wouldn't want to delete a data partition, nor possibly a manufacturer's return to factory install partition. But I did happily delete my own that once did restore me to Win 8.1.

    Keep us informed about the activation issue. What does it say at "START, Settings, Update & Security, Activation" now?

    I have updated five PCs so far to 18.09 and supervised a sixth, and the only additional problem that I have encountered is that on my main PC, there was no sound. Four of these PCs are old, and although I used Device Manager to check for obvious conflicts, I did not see any signs of conflicts on any of the updated PCs. But on checking my Realtek drivers plus three others that now escape me, they needed updating, after which the sound returned on rebooting. Several other device drivers were also updated on other PCs.

    In relation to activation, I did not check thoroughly or routinely, but on the problem PC the licence key had reverted to the 25-digit default. It is now awaiting collection by its owner. On my own PC it says Windows is activated with a digital licence, and others say the same thing. I will report back if there are any obvious problems in this respect.
