Windows 10 1803 Update Error 0xc1900101

I tried all the suggestions in this and other threads without success in updating a VM (virtual machine) with W10 to 1803. In my mind I am furious. Why must we, the end-users try all these tricks to let MS install an update ??!? Surely they should cater for this and their software should automatically sort out the crap !

Been going through this with multiple PCs w/varying configurations ever since Mocrosoft's feature updates have become a thing, it's getting downright tiring now especially when the fail rate for me has been in the 90% range. Since 1987 haven't "fresh installed" the OS on so many computers, so much for advancement in technology... I'd be rich if we could recoup the costs associated with the hours/days spent going the motions in attempts to resolve. A means to suspend feature updates indefinitely would be nice yet doubt that will be an option if MS has their way. As with many others here were on our way to dumping Windows 10 altogether, already have in some instances been using Linux/Mac OS and/or, reverting some of my computers to Win7. Maybe one day MS will figure it out yet doubtful if the past three years are any indication.

Do you think you’re the first person to com on this site and threaten to switch to Mac/Linux?  There’s one of you in almost every thread.  And I’ll invite you to please:  go ahead.  Switch to Linux on your desktops.  And stink up *their* forums with your whining from now on.

So what's your deal, Microsoft is so perfect and does no wrong in your eyes? Windows 10 and it's updates are "prefect"? Your the only one allowed an opinion?

After dealing with Windows (PC / mobile), along w/others, for literally years, this is definitely not my first kick at the can. So have a good idea what's been working for ME and and what is not. Nor am I basing things off just one device either as it has been on multiples. And it hasn't been for the lack of effort either, at some point one has to say enough is enough.

Has it never occurred to you that many may never find a resolution to their update woes through what is the called "common fixes" as that is definitely a reality? That a clean install may be their only way out? Would that not frustrate the heck out of you if it became a regular occurrence? It sure does for me because I've been there far too many times with it seemingly getting worse. Yup, we go through the same routines applying those common fixes and have yet to hit pay dirt, might get lucky w/update sticking on its own but that's usually without any rhyme or reason, and several attempts. Nine out 10 times we've spent far too many hour / days diagnosing and fixing something that should not be, especially in this day and age - others seemingly do it why can't MS. Totally opposite experience updating all my non-Microsoft products, no none are perfect but from where I stand the difference has been night-n-day with problems having been a rarity rather than the norm.

So just toyed with a laptop this weekend that had a fresh install of the Fall Update (1709) earlier this year, no updates, no user installed software, no usage since, none. So you'd think installing the April Update would be a breeze right? Nope, encountered error 0xc1900101 which they say is a driver issue. Checked / tried updating all my drivers yet it says they are all up-to-date, go figure. Next, carried on with other common fixes (there are many, too many to be exact) and again nope, each one tried does nothing to resolve after much time applying each, then retrying the install. Always greeted w/same error. Finally decided "screw this!" and performed another fresh install. Lo and behold we have success but at what expense? Our work ain't finished yet as now there's apps/files to install, customizing to my taste, essentially more wasted time getting to a point where it becomes "MY" laptop - once was at that place but MS and their Windows 10 "as a service" changed all that and now we are lucky if we sustain that position for more than 6-8 months.

Then there's my work PC that keeps hounding me, or proceeds on its own, to install the 1803 update. Six times now with each generating a different error code, two related while the others are not. WTH is with that? Don't have time to deal with this crap especially when its work related. And these types of experiences have played out similarly with the other 9 computers I own - luckily one PC, only one, has ceased to hound me so it's been stable enough on build 1709. But when it does start to hound heaven forbid is all I can say.

So my conclusion - Microsoft needed to seriously revisit their approach to updating Window 10 "as a service" because I feel sorry for those less than tech savvy. And they need to provide a way to suspend Feature Updates indefinitely while allowing Cumulative ones. While others are trudging forward with their operating systems MS seem to be leaning towards a degree in Rocket Science if one chooses to own a Windows PC, becoming quite ridiculous if you ask me - and IMHO it has become much worse than the past so we're no better off because the OS itself has become dumber than ever. Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "Finding a needle in a haystack".
