Windows 10 1803 update gives this message 0xc1900101. Then windows update starts the download again.
Then it's message 0x80070005.

0xC1900101 is generic error code and points to driver incompatibility while you opt to upgrade. You need to read the dialog, which likely came before this error message. There should be additional information with the detail. The dialog will tell you what devices are having a problem. That is the one you need to get a new driver for.
Once you fixed the driver(s) mentioned with detail, the error will no longer persist.

I fought with trying to update to 1803 for months. I tried everything I could think of but kept getting rolled back before completion. It was so frustrating and I can feel all of your pain. However, I finally bit the bullet and reset my PC (Settings>Recovery>Reset this PC). I had resisted because of not knowing whether I'd brick my PC, lose data files or the hassle of reinstalling programs and having to configure everything. RESETTING WAS THE BEST DECISION I'VE EVER MADE RELATED TO WINDOWS. My PC is about 5 years old and Windows 10 was an upgrade from the original 7 that it came with. All the crap that had accumulated with updates and changes is now gone. Not only was the new install 1803, but when it came to upgrading to 1809 a month later, it went without a hitch. I didn't bother reinstalling the applications that I hadn't used in forever. My PC has never run better; fast and smooth. Reset even creates a list of applications you had installed and puts the file on your desktop. Just make sure you have the activation codes for the programs you need to reinstall.
The whole process took me far less time than I had wasted trying to get to 1803 via Windows Update. It's obviously not what I wanted, but having gone through it I'm happy I finally took this route. None of my data was lost and almost all my customizations were maintained.
been trying to install 1809 for the last 2 days on windows 10 pro. My issue is that it goes through multiple restarts then gets stuck at 86% and wont proceed any further. How long it stays stuck there is normally determined by how annoyed i am at being on my laptop, coming back over and over again and seeing its still stuck at 86% so i force a restart of the machine in which case it rolls back to 1803. ive left it as long as 3-4hrs at 86% and by that time I am absolutely cranky. somebody else suggested leaving it for 7hrs. Why should a simple update take so damn long?? Im not going to leave my machine running for 7hrs just to watch it trying to install (or not installing) what looks to be a borked update.
Ive read up on everything across multiple forums, deleted softwaredistribution folder, disabled Visualization Tech in my system bios , tried updating with windows update assistant, offline from USB after creating a new install using media creation tool... Nothing... Still stuck at 86% each and every time.
Im currently attempting to install it for a probably an 8th time after noticing the update was making folders spread across different hard drives and SSDs so I disconnected all my storage devices apart from the main drive to see if I can finally get it to complete the update before I have to worry about shaving my beard.
Its currently stuck at 86% again and im gonna leave it for another 3hrs while im at the gym. I dont have high hopes that it would be completed by the time i return.
If its still 86% when i come back then I guess im stuck waiting for whatever build comes after 1809 as it seems Microsoft cant get their act together.
If only linux had better support! I wouldnt need to put up with such crapware.
Hi Chef . I had the same problems with 1803 but found deleting my c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder contents got me to 1809 . No this is back doing the same thig gets to 5% and then uninstalls it self after installing all the way up to 1809 without problems. I have to wonder whether Microsoft is testing its updates on Windows Professional 10 /. I had a similar problem 4th October 2018 where it went 52 % and then removed its install. I was told at the time to pause updates. Strangely this update was altered over Christmas and the update change behaviour running to 100% and then not ever installing .
