Windows 10 1803 update gives this message  0xc1900101. Then windows update starts the download again.

Then it's message 0x80070005.

How to escape from this.Win10 pro, 1709

Hello,

0xC1900101 is generic error code and points to driver incompatibility while you opt to upgrade. You need to read the dialog, which likely came before this error message. There should be additional information with the detail. The dialog will tell you what devices are having a problem. That is the one you need to get a new driver for. 

Once you fixed the driver(s) mentioned with detail, the error will no longer persist.

    Yes, last night I had to admit defeat on the upgrade route and undertake a clean install manually, which went flawlessly. It was just a matter of afterwards of updating a few drivers following one warning, and all is well with full internet and intranet functionality (to make it all sound very grand and technical). The past history of updates has also been removed from the appropriate page.

    I followed the 'no installation key' route, and it installed utilising my digital licence/license key (apparently). I didn't hear from Cortana, who must have been on a comfort break, but I did have to supply my router password, as usual. I will see what Greg has to say on the subject of activation.

    The mistake I made initially was not to have removed the old partitions from the hard disk before commencing the installation, which appeared to have caused the 'partitions are wrongly formatted' error messages.

    It took 26 minutes to do my own clean install, & Cortana was speaking after 17 of them. She asked for my MSFT & Wi-Fi passwords only. The Wi-Fi password is written on the router. Afterwards, Windows was activated & my digital license was intact. If you can't do it that way - Greg has a few paragraphs on activation in there, but it still leads to that URL I posted earlier.

    Many thanks again.

    I am going to wait until the owner decides what she wants to do before I spend anymore time on it. If she wants to receive the PC back to use as a spare, I will format and reinstall from scratch, and just see what, if anything, happens, and then cross the activation issue if and when it arises. I have already made her an offer for the spare parts....

    Three additional points. I have seen the ~WS folder occasionally when carrying out numerous previous updates on other machines, but not on this one. I tested the RAM using three different third-party programs, and found no problems. One thing that I experienced with these numerous upgrade attempts on this PC, and on this PC only, is that when it attempted to undertake a warm reboot, it invariably failed and I had to repower-up, after which it carried on regardless....

    I am now well into the processes of preparing bootable Windows 10 media in as many forms as our illustrious software publishers permit.

    I will report further if indeed there is anything further of relevance to report.
