Hi Michael,

I believe that your IT department is right.

It is probable that the problem in v1803 is associated with the "Periodic Scanning"

button. Please see my posts in this thread for August 27 and 28.

I think there is a fault in v1803, that leaves only some PCs without a functioning

periodic scanning button.

In other threads, some have had this same problem, and their button was turned on.

Yet, when they uninstalled their third party anti-virus, there problem was corrected.

A functioning periodic scanning button allows Windows Defender to work in concert

with third party anti-virus programs.

EDIT:

I did not have this link in hand when I first replied to your post.

This link is my case in point.

Andrew had the same problem, that was originally expressed in this thread.

He had also been successfully running a third party security program, in concert with

Windows Defender, until W10 v1803 was installed. And his periodic scanning button

was turned "ON".

Pay particular attention to the second page of his thread.

Regards,  Glen

    Hi ZeTomaz,

Try this to see if will help.

Check to ensure that your Periodic Scanning button in Windows Defender is set

to "ON". This button is at the bottom of the WD "Virus & Threat Protection" screen.

It should be "ON". If it is, try this to ensure that it is effective. Turn it "OFF" and restart

your PC. Then turn it "ON" and restart again. Retry to access Windows Defender.

    Good Luck,  Glen

    Hi GlenProuty,

    Thank you for your advise.

I've tried that and it did not solve the problem. For a wile the windows defender icon hidden in the task bar persisted with the red (X).

I did not paid much more attention after some people start suspecting that it was probably a conflict problem with Bit Defender, the same antivirus that I've installed in my machine. After some updates from my antivirus the problem vanished.

I really don't know what happened.

    Kind regards,

    Zé Tomaz

this is the message I get when I try to scan a drive using windows defender(right click and scan using windows defender option).

    windows specification:

    edition:windows 10 home

    version:1803

    os build:17134.48

    device specification:

    hp envy x 360 convertible

    Steps that worked for me:

    1. Type in Windows search: gpedit.msc and right-click it to select "Run as Administrator"
    2. ON the left side, navigate to Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Data Collection and Preview Builds.
    3. Once inside that folder, find "Allow Telemetry"
    4. Open it, click the bubble next to "Enabled" at the top left, and under "Options", select "3 - Full" from the drop-down list, and click "OK" to save and close it.
    5. Open it again, and select the "Not Configured" bubble in the top left.
    6. Restart the computer.
    7. Wait a few minutes for everything in the settings to catch up, and then follow this step:
    8. Type CMD into Windows Search and right click to select "Run as Administrator".
    9. Copy and run this command as is:

REG DELETE "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender" /v DisableAntiSpyware

    1. Restart the computer again. Wait a few minutes and navigate to the Windows Antimalware again. I found that my message went away and the annoying red message about some settings being managed by my organization.

    Hope this helps! Cheers
