Windows defender permision

this is the message I get when I try to scan a drive using windows defender(right click and scan using windows defender option).

windows specification:

edition:windows 10 home

version:1803

os build:17134.48

device specification:

hp envy x 360 convertible

Hi Michael,

I believe that your IT department is right.

It is probable that the problem in v1803 is associated with the "Periodic Scanning"

button. Please see my posts in this thread for August 27 and 28.

I think there is a fault in v1803, that leaves only some PCs without a functioning

periodic scanning button.

In other threads, some have had this same problem, and their button was turned on.

Yet, when they uninstalled their third party anti-virus, there problem was corrected.

A functioning periodic scanning button allows Windows Defender to work in concert

with third party anti-virus programs.

Andrew had the same problem, that was originally expressed in this thread.

He had also been successfully running a third party security program, in concert with

Windows Defender, until W10 v1803 was installed. And his periodic scanning button

was turned "ON".

    If you do try to re-install, don't forget to turn ON the periodic scanning button.

    If you do try to re-install, re-install what? windows 10 I have no idea. I have sorta gave up on it, go back I turn it on and turn it off. I am running PC Matic.

    Hi Charles,

    I was referring to any third party anti-virus that you may have installed. In Jumio's

    case that was Mcafee. In yours it's PC Matic. The uninstalling was in reference to

    that program. If you have the means to re-install PC Matic, I am suggesting that

    you uninstall it. Only after you determine that your periodic scanning is turned on.

    I suspect that through some anomaly, certain PCs that had third party programs

    installed, when v1803 was installed, have lost the function that the periodic scanning

    button afforded, before v1803 was installed. This is evidenced by observing the

    many descriptions of this failure. For one, see the LINK in my post to Jumio above.

    The first thing to try, is to turn off periodic scanning, if you can. Restart, and then

    turn it back on. Restart again, and attempt to access Windows Defender.

    If after uninstalling PC Matic, your Windows Defender becomes accessible, then

    you fit into the same category as others. Note: Some antivirus programs require

    the use of their own removal programs, after they are uninstalled in the normal

    fashion. You may find a removal program for PC Matic at this location: http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=soln146   if you know the name of its manufacturer.

    If you find that removing PC Matic fixed your problem, then you might want to

    try re-installing it. When you do, ensure that the periodic scanning button is set to

    "ON", after it is installed. If this procedure returned function to the periodic scanning

    button, then you will be able to utilize both PC Matic and Windows Defender.
