Hi Michael,

I believe that your IT department is right.

It is probable that the problem in v1803 is associated with the "Periodic Scanning"

button. Please see my posts in this thread for August 27 and 28.

I think there is a fault in v1803, that leaves only some PCs without a functioning

periodic scanning button.

In other threads, some have had this same problem, and their button was turned on.

Yet, when they uninstalled their third party anti-virus, there problem was corrected.

A functioning periodic scanning button allows Windows Defender to work in concert

with third party anti-virus programs.

EDIT:

I did not have this link in hand when I first replied to your post.

This link is my case in point.

Andrew had the same problem, that was originally expressed in this thread.

He had also been successfully running a third party security program, in concert with

Windows Defender, until W10 v1803 was installed. And his periodic scanning button

was turned "ON".

Pay particular attention to the second page of his thread.

Regards,  Glen

I too am having this exact fault.

In addition to this, when I try to update, I run into the following error:

Definition Update for Windows Defender Antivirus - KB2267602 (Definition 1.271.1003.0) - Error 0x80070643

I dug around and thought this may be because of corrupt data. Having run CHKDSK I can see this isn't the case.

On the off-chance that either 'Spybot Search and Destroy' or 'SUPER ANTI SPYWARE' would be throwing a spanner in the works, I've uninstalled these.

I've checked the group policy and ensured that option 'Turn off real-time protection' is set to 'Disabled'.

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows\_10-update/definition-update-for-windows-defender-antivirus/a2537eca-c477-43d2-9dfd-4642d0799880

I've gone through all the troubleshooting in this thread too.

The Windows Update Troubleshooter did detect some faults which were fixed, but the definition update is still failing to install.

Realtime protection is still greyed out. When I right click the Windows Defender Notification Icon and click 'Run Quick Scan' I continue to encounter the original error 'Page not available' etc.

Following the troubleshooting tips on: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/mse-protect\_start/installation-error-0x80070643/908fad3e-f9fc-4d8a-be83-ae7d3bc48db5

I already have the Windows Installer service running

I'm about to try Selective Startup.

The links on that page don't work but I'm assuming it's referring to 'Diagnostic startup' from within MSCONFIG ?

If anyone has any other tips, I'm all ears.

This started happening to me right after I installed the big April update.  Workaround that worked for me is to go into Task Manager under Background Processes and close the Windows Defender Notification .  When the icon disappears from the system tray, go to c:\Program Files\Windows Defender and open MSASCuiL.exe.  Then the system tray icon returns with the green check mark.

But when I restart the computer I get the red x again, so I have to go through this all over again each time I restart.

    Please fix this, Microsoft!

I have experienced the same problem when, on June 24, 2018, I did a clean reinstall of Windows 10 Home edition from Microsoft's current .ISO.  (After the Windows 10 reinstall was complete I reinstalled "Norton Security" but the issue is apparently not specific to a particular anti-virus program).

Multiple others have experienced this problem.  Yes, Mircosoft, please fix this.
