This issue has now been resolved in KB4100403.
To get the Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803), we encourage you to wait until the update is offered to your device. If you’re an advanced user on an actively serviced version of Windows 10 and would like to install the Windows 10 April 2018 update now, you can manually check for updates. In the Search tab, type “Settings”. On the Settings page, navigate to Update & security > Windows Update > click “**Check for updates”,**which **** will include this resolution.
I wouldn't recommend attempting the update at all at this stage, even with this "fix". It seems KB4100403 is a fix ONCE 1803 is installed, which, if you have an Intel SSD (I have a brand new Surface Pro) means you will end up with issues before you can get a chance to get KB4100403. Surely you would have pushed that KB4100403 into the 1803 in some fashion and/or a preliminary patch to avoid errors getting 1803 installed?

Devices with Intel SSD 600p Series or Intel SSD Pro 6000p Series may crash and enter a UEFI screen after reboot when upgrading to Windows 10 April 2018 Update
When attempting to upgrade to the Windows 10 April 2018 Update, select devices with Intel SSD 600p Series or Intel SSD Pro 6000p Series may crash and enter a UEFI screen after reboot.
Microsoft is working with OEM partners and Intel to identify and block devices with Intel SSD 600p Series or Intel SSD Pro 6000p Series from installing the April 2018 Update due to a know incompatibility that may cause performance and stability issues. If you have encountered this issue, follow the steps to reinstall the previous operating system (Windows 10, version 1709).
Microsoft is currently working on a resolution that will allow the April 2018 Update on these devices in the near future.
Update (6/22/18):
Microsoft has included a solution for this issue in the May 23, 2018 Cumulative Update (KB4100403). This solution prevents the issue from occurring when installing the April 2018 Update. Please note that this solution does not restore systems that have already experienced the issue and are currently booting to a UEFI screen. Any devices already impacted should still follow steps to reinstall the previous operating system (Windows 10, version 1709). Any devices with Intel SSD 600p Series or Intel SSD Pro 6000p Series that have installed the June 12, 2018 Cumulative Update (KB4284835) will no longer be blocked from installing the April 2018 Update.

2018-06-20T11:32:53+00:00 Add another one to the list of really annoyed customers!!!
My surface is only 6 months old, I just had setup everything as I wanted but I left automatic updates on, trusting Microsoft to deliver only critical and thoroughly tested updates, or that is what I thought. Wrong move!!!
I cannot believe once more Microsoft sells software that does not work, not only that, then following all your guides, My friend Carlos, who is a Bsc(Hons) in Computing and IT has been unable to reset the surface, go to a previous restore point, restore an image I had of a backup, start the surface in safe mode or format the drive again with professional partitioning software or data rescue. Basically the disk is inaccessible, dispart return errors when accessing the disk, bootrec /fixbot gives "Access denied" when I am the Administrator.
What I am really furious about, is not that Microsoft has made a boo-boo, that is clearly expected after their long history of software that doesn't work, but that Microsoft never acknowledge the problem and says this has been resolved. Well, clearly not in my case, now i have to send the surface back to you and wait till you send me back a new one that may encounter the same problem when is out of warranty.
This is happening to thousands of your customers, please do a search in forums, you should be sending an email to every customer of a surface that may have encounter this problem with clear instructions to follow on how to resolve it. Clearly that my surface is not working is your fault and it should be Microsoft who publicly fix the problem, not us customers having to go through a myriad of possible solutions that do not work either.

2018-06-24T23:41:10+00:00 I did exactly the same thing, I've updated my hp laptop (allowed it in advanced settings), and so far no problem, so these four hours Laptop didn't crash and i was running several edge tabs and two virtual machines, so i guess this is ok.
bravo for Microsoft?

2018-07-22T18:03:51+00:00 Unless consumers are willing to buy new computers every year, Microsoft, you need to give people an option to update of not. I was told that Microsoft doesn't really plan on releasing any more Windows version, so Windows 10 with updates is it. If this is true, then Microsoft needs to stop releasing updates that damage computers. My Asus cpu has now been in for repairs more times this year than my car has. I've lost my hard drive, I've lost my graphics card, and I have absolutely no guarantees that this won't happen again. I'm seriously looking into buying a Mac. My laptop with Windows 7 works just fine without issues. Its old and slow but I'm not willing to upgrade it to a newer model if all I can get is Windows 10.

2018-06-18T15:58:28+00:00 The upgrade made in April sacked my laptop. It was stuck in the loop of select keyboard layout and then select system. In order to get out of this I had to go to a local repair shop and it has been a stressful situation. Now that my laptop is back to running, all of the former programs that came pre-installed like Windows Office are gone. I have a lot of files that are word and excel based that are not able to be opened. I have no idea how to get Office back on my pc because the programs came preloaded and I don't have a product key.
This has been one of the worst update / upgrade experiences I have ever had.
I posted earlier, paid a third party outfit to unsuccessfully get me back up, etc. To cut to the chase, Microsoft support finally got it up, and no Office, no key like you, pre-installed. Support got my Office back. Some documents corrupted with~S in front of documents. They won’t open, but so far it appears the same docs are retrievable without those symbols. Good luck. I wasted 2 full days working with customer service, going back and forth with older uninfected pc.
