HomeGroup is gone in Windows 10 version 1803!

I would share music files and printers from my home group.  Gone now.  Something that worked perfectly for me is no longer available.  Now I have to find a workaround because Microsoft does not provide one.  File share through explorer is greyed out unless you click on individual files -- folders would have made better sense. Any suggestions on how to simulate the old HG experience?

My PC upgraded to Windows 10 Pro version 1803 yesterday during automatic updates. This morning I attempted to view files in my network. Home Group is no longer available in this newest update. It seems in their wisdom they decided it was not needed and provided other solutions to share files/directories. I following the instructions to share files/directories via Windows Explorer. Guess what? You can not share directories only individual files at one time. This is not acceptable. After much trial and error I found a work around. As long as you have the name of the PC in your network you can enter "\PCNAME" and it should give you access. Bring back Home Group to the Windows operating system!

I quite Agree I have also lost my Homegroup on the Automatic update as it is getting difficult to stop it from doing it as it downloads and updates when you shut down without any warning!!?? This wouldn't be a problem if it all worked but time and time again now the updates cause untold problems, this is why you then need the next update because the first one was rubbish. Sorry but the guys and girls at Microsoft need to get there act together. Not Amused. More wasted time fixing problems not of my making. You get the impression they don't test and don't care.

Yes, I've done that on my Windows 10 laptop, i.e., used \PCNAME in order to see files on my Windows 7 laptop (i.e., on \PCNAME).  So, with that fix, the Windows 10 laptop can see files on the Windows 7 laptop.  But, I haven't been able to follow anything here that tells me how to fix things so that the Windows 7 laptop can see files on the Windows 10 laptop.   Previously, everything was arranged through HomeGroups, when both Windows 7 and Windows 10 used HomeGroups.   Windows 7 still uses HomeGroups and that may be the reason that the Windows 10 machine can see files on the Windows 7 machine.  

When I was networking my Vista laptop and my Windows 7 laptop several years ago (before Vista expired), I didn't know anything about HomeGroups.  But, the two machines could see each other's files.  When I was on the Windows 7 machine, a screen would pop up for providing the PCNAME and password for the Vista machine.  When I was on the Vista machine, a screen would pop up for giving the PCNAME and password for the Windows 7 laptop.  It was so long ago that I do not remember now.  May be that's the route to go??

Either way (i.e., with a login dialog box or by fixing the network so that the Windows 10 personal foldername is accessible), can anyone help me figure out how the Windows 7 laptop can see files on the Windows 10 machine.  All of the files are under the Windows 10 personalfolder. 

Right now, the Windows 7 machine can see the Windows 10 PCname, but the Users are  only two: Default and Default.migrated.  My Windows 10 personalfoldername is not there under Users.  However, my Windows 10 personalfoldername is listed separately,  I think this happened because on the Windows 10 machine, I clicked on Properties > Sharing > and when the dialog box came up, I clicked the box for  "Share this folder" and filled in the Windows 10 personalfoldername in the "Share name" field.  But, I don't know if this is right place to be because when I click on the box "Permissions", it asks for group or user names, but I don't know what to put there - does the Windows 7 PCName go there??  I want the Windows 7 laptop to add files, rename files, delete files within the Windows 10 personalfoldername.

Obviously, I need explicit directions, if there are any.  I tried to follow Steve, but it seemed to me that he was trying to network two Windows 10 machines.  Here I am trying to get the Windows 7 machine to be able to read/write on the Windows 10, but only under the Windows 10 personalfoldername.
