Lumia 950XL - Project My Screen not working after Win10 1803 Update - Black Screen

You have to remember/know  where the clickable tiles are placed  in the start screen of your phone....

Sounds like the phone is being treated as a Touch screen so the virtual Touch pad would be in Touch screen support mode, hence no mouse pointer to see.   Does the phone have anything equivalent to Mouse Sonar (e.g. in Mouse Properties, Pointer Options) so you could use a Ctrl- key to give you some concentric circles to center a click action with?  Or the equivalent of a Pen visual pointer to allow you to see a pen tracking across the screen?

NO, the phone looks perfectly normal, so no cursor,  pointer ....

May I summarize:

1. Model of  Lumia phones can be excluded as culprit of this malfunction, since several different models behave the same way.
2. ditto for PC hardware, since different types/models/GPU types all fail
3. Problem appeared after update to 1803 version. Previous versions were/are OK

Moreover , the last 4  key controls shown here below do not work, while the first 5 controls work :

Key R, "display current frame rate" : see here below ... rather funny...always zero.. but the number of dots after "Avg: 0.00"  increments by one every second or so  and then back to one, cycling. Meaning that the measuring routine is active ( maybe, .... just my guessing ).

Communication from PC to phone is active but the other way around is not ? Perhaps.

Version of the app is as follows ( I could not find a newer one in MS sites ), more than 2 years old, Feb 2016  :

 At the end of the day, one or more of the thousands of files that have been changed by the 1803 upgrade is/are faulty  or missing or the "project my screen app" needs an update.

So IMHO unless somebody within MS, responsible for this app  shades some light , we, as MS customers, have come to an end, in terms of problem determination.

That doesn't answer the question.  Does the phone have that capability and if it would be enabled would you get the help from such a workaround?  I am aware that this may not be the original designed functionality for the Project My Screen app.

That's why we need diagnostics, for both ends.   Also, what is the UI on the phone from just the PMS app?  I only know what the Connect app may cause.   E.g. I use the W8.1 Devices charm, go to Project, pick the host or choose Add a wireless display if the host is not showing, Remove it if the connection isn't working, then on the host start the Connect app, repeat the previous sequence on the client to see it, see a prompt for a PIN, read the PIN on the host side, type the PIN on the client and finally see either the tablet's screen or its second screen, depending on the Project state (e.g. as shown by Win+P).  Would all that be expected to happen if I had only the USB tether and no Wi-Fi for the connection?  What about using Bluetooth and getting a connection using it instead?  Actually I had been wondering if the USB tether created some kind of LAN connection, in which case we could see both ends more conventionally than via these virtual screen effects.  Then if that were the case I would expect to be able to use either that or BT PAN for supporting a Hosted Network Wi-Fi connection which would lead back to the real Connect app and no need for the PMS app (or finally the USB tether) at all.   ; )

 No, the phone does not have a capability  to handle any  pointing device. It is a plain Windows 10 Phone. Input method is the touch screen. ( hope this answer your question. To be honest I hardly understand it. I've never seen a winphone with a mouse attached to it.. ).

When I start the Project my screen app on the PC, the phone is in its Start screen , on the phone the user is asked if he/she wants to project the screen, it is answered YES  and at this point the phone start screen must appear on the PC. It does not, now. At this point, with a working app , you start using your phone by clicking the tiles on the PC and the phone executes what you decided to do, and the changes are reflected back on the PC.

I only know what the Connect app may cause. Let's forget the Connect application. I do not have a wireless display. I cannot use the Connect application.  We are dealing with "Project my screen app" anyway. E*.g. WI-FI is not used by this application, it might be on or off, it does not make any difference. I tried with WI-FI and BT both switched off, just to be sure.
