If you have a keyboard connected, simultaneously press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B . If you’re on a tablet, simultaneously press both the volume-up and volume-down buttons, three times within 2 seconds. If Windows is responsive, a short beep will sound and the screen will blink or dim while Windows attempts to refresh the screen. If you’re using a laptop, close and open the laptop lid. Microsoft is working on a solution with the goal of including it in the next regular monthly update, currently targeted for a release date of May 8, 2018. Update (5/8/18): A solution was included in the May 8th, 2018 cumulative update (KB4103721). Windows Update will automatically download and install the solution. To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update , and select Check for updates . If your system still experiences performance problems after installing the latest updates, you may be experiencing a different issue. Might be a good idea to make sure Windows support agents are aware of this. I have already spent hours with them trying to resolve this issue and none of them mentioned the Windows logo key + Ctrl Shift + B fix. cant talk with Cortana

My Installed Updates screen informs me that the latest (and only) "Update for Microsoft Windows" corresponds to KB4100403. Reading this thread, it's apparent there are more up-to-date versions since my version was released,... I don't know if you have in mind my mention of "KB4100403 and then KB4287903" or something else, but KB4100403 is the only update for Windows I have too. KB4287903 was a security update for Adobe Flash Player, but still seemed to cause problems on my machine. At least, things did improve for a while after I uninstalled it. I did eventually figure out that the supposed "solution" (KB4103721), mentioned in the OP, probably was included in the version of 1803 which I received on May 16. On another subject: I'm no expert in the field, but since I've noticed my system grinding to a shuddering halt as the day wears on, I'm tending to suspect it might be caused by a memory leak. Thanks for the link, Colin. I had (mistakenly) concluded that the update associated with KB4100403 was out-of-date based solely on the higher KB number corresponding to the May 8, 2018 update. A previous post suggested I check the OS version itself, which I did, and I'm now thinking my system IS up-to-date, despite the KB numbers. Luckily, my system has been stable since I first reported the issue here.

You're welcome. Also, I did figure how to add counters. Open the Performance Monitor screen and click on the big green "+" icon, which opens a new window. Then, scroll down to Memory and to Paging File and expand them to find the counters listed.
