If your device freezes when using an app, try one of the following steps to recover Windows without needing to restart: Try a Windows key sequence to wake the screen. If you have a keyboard connected, simultaneously press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B . If you’re on a tablet, simultaneously press both the volume-up and volume-down buttons, three times within 2 seconds. If Windows is responsive, a short beep will sound and the screen will blink or dim while Windows attempts to refresh the screen. If you’re using a laptop, close and open the laptop lid. Update (5/8/18): A solution was included in the May 8th, 2018 cumulative update (KB4103721). Windows Update will automatically download and install the solution. To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update , and select Check for updates . If your system still experiences performance problems after installing the latest updates, you may be experiencing a different issue. I have noticed that I am having the same issue. I tried the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B, and it made the frozen mouse cursor disappear, but did not unfreeze the computer. I have went and look at my Windows 10 Pro version number and it is showing 1709, OS Build 16299.371. So my question is, is anybody having this issue with freezing using 1709 version also. I definitely have it freeze mostly using Google Chrome and rarely with other apps and programs. I have checked Task Manger and verified, I am not pegging 100% on CPU, memory, or disk. Never on 1709, that I can recall. Except for frequently frozen mouse pointer. That, to me, seems peculiar to a WiFi mouse. Not so much with USB mice I had in the past, except maybe if the sensor was dirty or something... Chrome does use a lot of RAM, especially the way I often use it, with multiple tabs open and multiple add-ons/extensions. And, btw, the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B fix doesn't help that much with Chrome itself even tho RAM usage is running at about 50% total . Seems to have unfrozen most other apps running at the same time. I was using a program which did use 100% available CPU, with no effect on performance. Only since the "1803" update has there been constant app hangs and occasional screen freezes. According to my System Information it's not 1803, but Version 10.0.17134 Build 17134. ??

It's nearly a month later and I never received the supposed solution. Checking for updates today, I find KB4100403 instead. ??

Also, Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B seems only a partial or temporary fix at best. I'm still getting frequent apps "not responding" and some screen freezes. That seems to also include Windows Update. KB4100403 failed to install twice now, with a different error code each time. When I check update history it says restart required. Again, ?????

Update KB4100403 didn't help. Made things worse, for Chrome at least. Now I'm stuck with a barely functioning system. What to do?

What kind of crap is this? I clicked the link in the OP for KB4103721 and found it was available from MS Update Catalogue. Never offered to me as an automatic update, afaik. Even then, trying to install it gives me some unknown error. Please note, as well, the lack of or corruption of fonts in text fields. I've seen it before, since 1803, but not as bad as the example above. Restart seemed to fix that, so the message seems to be: It's NOT already installed! Not as far as I can see anyway. I uninstalled KB4100403, because it didn't seem to apply to me and seemed to make matters worse. Still I'm stuck with a below par system, thanks to 1803. Is anyone actually monitoring this thread any more?
