Some devices may hang or freeze when using certain apps, such as “Hey Cortana” or Chrome, after installing the Windows 10 April 2018 Update

Microsoft is aware that some devices running the Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803) may hang or freeze when using certain apps, such as “Hey Cortana” or Chrome.

If your device freezes when using an app, try one of the following steps to recover Windows without needing to restart:

  1. Try a Windows key sequence to wake the screen.  If you have a keyboard connected, simultaneously press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. If you’re on a tablet, simultaneously press both the volume-up and volume-down buttons, three times within 2 seconds.  If Windows is responsive, a short beep will sound and the screen will blink or dim while Windows attempts to refresh the screen.
  2. If you’re using a laptop, close and open the laptop lid.

Microsoft is working on a solution with the goal of including it in the next regular monthly update, currently targeted for a release date of May 8, 2018.

Update (5/8/18):  A solution was included in the May 8th, 2018 cumulative update (KB4103721).  Windows Update will automatically download and install the solution.  To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.  If your system still experiences performance problems after installing the latest updates, you may be experiencing a different issue.  Please describe your issue in another thread or by using the Feedback Hub.

Microsoft needs to stop trying to make Dream Apps and get back to reality -- produce a product that works for the average end-users. Not everyone needs a Cadillac, and those who do have an addiction to new technology should be offered that option, but leave the rest of us -- and our pc's -- alone.

I'm really pissed this time. I can get past the Sign-in window, but then it goes to a White Screen with Cortana nonsense and that annoying voice. Cannot access anything other than the Sign-in -- SO THE "FIX" ON MAY 8TH WILL DO ME ABSOLUTELY NO GOOD IF I CANNOT ACCESS ANY PORTION OF MY PC!!!

I'm 1/4 step away now to opting out of Windows.

This is all unnecessary, and extremely disgusting that a company can continue to offer such garbage for products with no compensation for the end-user (i.e., Vista being quickly dumped, with no option but purchase new MS products).

Since when are U.S. companies not liable to their clients for producing and selling TRASH?

They didn't mention it because it only works on a tiny % of machines.

Issues seems to be related to the video card. Kept getting freezing across UWA and Chrome since I upgraded to 1803.

Today, I've been using my laptop with a display link dock with my laptop screen disabled, no freeze at all. The moment I unplugged it from the dock and open up an UWA, it froze.

I'm using Intel UHD 620 graphics if that helps? Updated to latest release from Intel doesn't help.

This happens in certain games too, like Dragon Age Inquisition, Rise Of The Tomb Raider and others - With AMD graphic cards. The screen will hang/freeze randomly after 2 or more minutes, but you can put the computer to sleep and resume to unfreeze the system.

Video driver rollback/update will not help on this.
