Some devices may hang or freeze when using certain apps, such as “Hey Cortana” or Chrome, after installing the Windows 10 April 2018 Update

Microsoft is aware that some devices running the Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803) may hang or freeze when using certain apps, such as “Hey Cortana” or Chrome.

If your device freezes when using an app, try one of the following steps to recover Windows without needing to restart:

  1. Try a Windows key sequence to wake the screen.  If you have a keyboard connected, simultaneously press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. If you’re on a tablet, simultaneously press both the volume-up and volume-down buttons, three times within 2 seconds.  If Windows is responsive, a short beep will sound and the screen will blink or dim while Windows attempts to refresh the screen.
  2. If you’re using a laptop, close and open the laptop lid.

Microsoft is working on a solution with the goal of including it in the next regular monthly update, currently targeted for a release date of May 8, 2018.

Update (5/8/18):  A solution was included in the May 8th, 2018 cumulative update (KB4103721).  Windows Update will automatically download and install the solution.  To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.  If your system still experiences performance problems after installing the latest updates, you may be experiencing a different issue.  Please describe your issue in another thread or by using the Feedback Hub.

Yesterday I tried to install the latest Windows 10 April 2018 update and my PC froze witha white screen displaying the following text :

    ______________________________________________________________________________

    . Welcome

    . Basics

    . Network

    . Account

    . Services

works, and the related data transfers and uses.

    _______________________________________________________________________________

    Use speech recognition

Talk to Cortana and other apps that support cloud based voice recognition.

Send Microsodt your voice input to help improve our speech services

I can use cntl-alt-del and get Task Manager but I can't use anything except Sign out

I also tried Win+cntl+shift+B but nothing happens.

So, basically I am screwed. Any suggestion on how I can come out of this mess ?

HP Envy 2018 with SSD 6000p a living hell with this update, crashing all the time, no way to roll back to previous build frustration at the highest level !!!

Dear Microsoft I always been a die hard supporter but this time is really enough, thanks for making my working week a total disaster this is an elephant bug not a minor flaw.

You are guaranteed this is the last Microsoft *powered* device I have purchased, people need to get work done not having you getting in the way with notification all day long, forcing to use buggy software (edge...back history button ...tells you anything ????).

Go to previous build expires after 10 days...? WTF ?!

I can't roll back, pc crashes every 10 minutes, (SSD harware I am sure is loving it) it crashes with your own software even more (licensed Office 2016) I am tearing my hair off thanks to you.

My support to you ends here, you will eventually fix this cow poop mastermind update you made, in the meantime I will save some money to buy a Mac (probably the first one of a long series) and use your tools eventually when I have no other choice but for sure NOT when I need to get some work done.

I did love you, it's sad but there is no choice.

    You are intrusive, unreliable, bossy.

    Bye.

Mine will not go anyway I try i am at c promp on my PC trying to figure out how to make changes to fix it.

By some miraculous works (maybe I had hard restart my PC several times??) my PC went into automatic restoration to the earlier Windows version (before the updated ****) and it's working well again ...

I'm only a simple IT user so I can't explain how, but if you can try to get the PC to restore the previous version should be fine I think ...
