Microsoft is aware that some devices running the Windows 10 April 2018 Update (version 1803) may hang or freeze when using certain apps, such as “Hey Cortana” or Chrome. If your device freezes when using an app, try one of the following steps to recover Windows without needing to restart: Try a Windows key sequence to wake the screen. If you have a keyboard connected, simultaneously press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B . If you’re on a tablet, simultaneously press both the volume-up and volume-down buttons, three times within 2 seconds. If Windows is responsive, a short beep will sound and the screen will blink or dim while Windows attempts to refresh the screen. If you’re using a laptop, close and open the laptop lid. Microsoft is working on a solution with the goal of including it in the next regular monthly update, currently targeted for a release date of May 8, 2018. Update (5/8/18): A solution was included in the May 8th, 2018 cumulative update (KB4103721). Windows Update will automatically download and install the solution. To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update , and select Check for updates . If your system still experiences performance problems after installing the latest updates, you may be experiencing a different issue. It might be worth noting that updates subsequent to 1803 are causing problems too. The same problems, as far as I can see. At least very similar, and actually worsening the situation. Twice now I have uninstalled recent updates, KB4100403 and then KB4287903, which did seem to resolve the problems in both cases. If only temporarily in one of them. And then, when they reinstall themselves a short time later there is no problem. Go figure. I don't know whether this is a different issue, or whether it's a symptom of the something more widespread than app hangs alone. Windows failing to display text properly, in a variety of situations. Failing to display icons and thumbnails at times as well. I don't know for sure, but, when this sort of thing happens, it looks to me like it has loaded the wrong font for some of my desktop icons.

A lot of people say they are having a problem with Chrome. I have no problems with Chrome but do with Edge. Streaming on Chrome no problem, streaming on Edge big problems. I guess sooner or later someone in the public will come up with a fix. Then Microsoft will tell all of us how to fix our computers.

Since the update for windows KB4100403 reinstalled itself yesterday, my system did work very well. Apart from Chrome hanging badly once, that is. Today it's not so good. Perhaps not so bad as it was. One can hope anyway.It so happens that I had another update install at boot up again today. KB4287903, Security update for Adobe Flash Player. Don't know if that might've messed things up again, but there's something really screwy going on if it did. ? p.p.s. I was thinking it was mostly Chrome and a Java app giving me problems today. Then I find the Control Panel is worse, and while it was mucking about some icons disappeared from my taskbar! So, I uninstalled KB4287903 and that apparently did fix the Chrome, Java and Control Panel issues as mentioned. Weird, huh? Had a major freeze with LibreOffice tho, while trying to examine an Excel spreadsheet. The GIMP was being a bit dilatory too. And, then.. A UAC dialogue froze for - idk - 30 seconds or so. All of that seems to have been resolved with a reboot. Don't ask me. But it does look like another, different, update did me no favours.

I don't use Photo Gallery, but several times I have noticed thumbnail images (maybe icon images as well?) not displaying properly since the 1803 update. Maybe, or maybe not, as often as text missing or messed up like I mentioned in another post. @Susan Bradley, my BIOS and drivers are all up to date. p.s. Multiple reboots didn't help. At least, I have an image backup from when it did seem more stable.
