After a recent major upgrade for Windows 10, my Windows Media Player is trying to find Album information from a new website that does not work.  The old web address was (fai.music.metaservices.microsoft.com) and new web address it is using is (musicmatch-ssl.xboxlive.com) which is not a valid address.  How do I change the web address used for album metadata back to correct address?  Searched old message boards with no luck.

Found a solution that worked for me:

  1. Start regedit.exe
  2. Navigate to "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\TunerConfig"
  3. Look for setting PREFERREDMETADATAPROVIDER -- it should have a value "pmpMusicMatch"
  4. Edit the setting PREFERREDMETADATAPROVIDER, and clear the value so you have a blank value
  5. Save / exit regedit.exe
  6. Restart Windows Media Player, you should be restored back to fai.music.metaservices.microsoft.com

What an unnecessary pain in the proverbial.

Update: this DOES NOT WORK any more.

Microsoft appear to have strangled this option off entirely. We are now stuck with the much lesser offering that is "musicmatch-ssl.xboxlive.com".

Microsoft: thanks for nothing.

Microsoft Messed Up Entirely When Not Continuing Support With Windows Media Player/Removing metadata from all previous versions of windows....all the DJ's and rappers use wmp for cataloging and arranging their music and also when recording they keep there files in wmp so when they want a song they go to wmp and get it...….as a dj myself I had thousands and thousands of hours spent putting my music on my wmp and had to lose it all trying to upgrade to windows 10 just to get meta data and wmp on windows 10 is garbage... mark my words Microsoft is and will be losing thousand of more dollars because of this....First off they stopped use because of usage statistics...and me being one of these people I unchecked the "Send my usage statistics to Microsoft" button"  and alos I would like to download an earlier version of wmp but they won't allow you to that is total bull I honestly need wmp so Microsoft needs to hire some new people possibly people who like music and use wmp and windows media center because windows media center is the cooles thing ever and I love it...….come on Microsoft give me a job. music makes the world go round just like the money so do better research take panels everybody says iTunes is garbage compared to windows media player because the layout is wack on itunes…. nothing compares to windows media player bring it back and fix the glitches on wmp 12 because wmp 11 had fewer of them I had wmp 11 on vista for years and I had no problems with it …..and the layout of windows media center on vista also is as future as it can look it was awesome.. also the new wmp 12 messed up a couple times already and I had to put my music on there numerous times because of wmp 12 failing I have bought old windows 7 laptops just for this reason and for Microsoft to discontinue metadata as of jan of 2019 and it took me a whole year to put the new music I just bought on there and for it to fail again come on Microsoft allow us to use older versions of wmp and or pay for metadata your going to lose people like crazy  oh and the xbox metadata is not nearly as good as microsofts.. music will never go anywhere it's  been around for years.. Example  as I upload soul music from the 50's 60's 70's.....so media player should never go anywhere either. come on MICROSOFT YOU NEED TO DO BETTER....Redo Your Tests And Get better Feedback I Know a few hundred people Personally that are mad so fix the issues...there is  a lot more money to be made By You Microsoft.  so go out and get it....don't turn it down...Give me a job or get someone in there that knows what they are doing......what are people using computers for.....Leisure activities such as movies and music … and everybody doesn't want to stream all the time I know what the users want....i am a user... i'm out - Mr. Muzik 101

This thread says I am not subscribed but MS keeps sending me email about updates to it anyway. So how do I stop that behaviour?

I can not find any elipsys anywhere to change my preference.
