Media Player web address for album info changed in recent Windows 10 upgrade

After a recent major upgrade for Windows 10, my Windows Media Player is trying to find Album information from a new website that does not work.  The old web address was (fai.music.metaservices.microsoft.com) and new web address it is using is (musicmatch-ssl.xboxlive.com) which is not a valid address.  How do I change the web address used for album metadata back to correct address?  Searched old message boards with no luck.

Found a solution that worked for me:

  1. Start regedit.exe
  2. Navigate to "Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\TunerConfig"
  3. Look for setting PREFERREDMETADATAPROVIDER -- it should have a value "pmpMusicMatch"
  4. Edit the setting PREFERREDMETADATAPROVIDER, and clear the value so you have a blank value
  5. Save / exit regedit.exe
  6. Restart Windows Media Player, you should be restored back to fai.music.metaservices.microsoft.com

What an unnecessary pain in the proverbial.

Update: this DOES NOT WORK any more.

Microsoft appear to have strangled this option off entirely. We are now stuck with the much lesser offering that is "musicmatch-ssl.xboxlive.com".

Microsoft: thanks for nothing.

    There is no way to fix this in update 1809. The only solution si to revert back to 1803 and do the regedit trick. And Microsoft will be killing off WMP. The developer ceased any further development on WMP, so my guess is they did this bug in 1809 on purpose to further alienate people from WMP to switch to their newer apps. It's time to find a third party app that can find album information and has option to edit found information and then input that to metadata.

    something weird just happened where now all of the sudden I can rip cd's using WMP

    I downloaded VLC media player in hopes to find another program that will rip cd's the same way.

    I installed it and popped the cd in, which by default loaded up WMP.

    I hit the rip cd button on WMP for the sake of it and it started ripping!

    I dont think I am ever turning off my PC from here on out!

    So maybe download that as I did, set everything up on VLC as if you are going to rip it, like I did. "convert" the cd as it is labeled.  then eject the cd, put it back in, and try to rip using WMP.

    Hopefully it works!

    Well, here we go yet again.  Bought some new CD's to rip and WMP can't reach this page, make sure the web address is correct.  Why can't they just leave the damn thing well enough alone.  You have this massive database of music which isn't perfect by any means, but still a good tool to quickly rip CD's and they have to keep screwing it up every few months.  There's got to be a better alternative out there.

    For me it was working up until June 6, 2019 & then kaputski.... ****?

    Surely there must be a registry hack where we can change a url or something to another metadata provider??????
